The East-West split in Canada is becoming a bigger and bigger problem, I think. Even in Conservative governments it often rears its ugly head since the high concentration of seats in Ontario and Quebec naturally forces governments to cater more to the East to keep their majorities. Just look at Alberta's recent moves to try to give themselves the authority to stop federal action even in areas of federal jurisdiction. Having a PM based in the West seems to help, as we saw with Harper, but that sometimes alienates the East given the West's penchant for leaning hard to the conservative end of the spectrum. Of course, the East is not uniformly liberal/Liberal either. Rural areas and some suburbs around here can be as conservative as the West while urban areas can even go NDP (as London-Fanshawe here tends to do and as all of London did provincially). And the strongly South Asian communities like Brampton are actually quite conservative socially and really only lean Liberal politically at times because the Libs are perceived (mostly correctly) as being pro-immigration and less Islamophobic. Hence Ontario's tendency to flip-flop between the parties rather than being identifiably liberal or conservative.I don't think there's anything Trudeau could do to convince many (most?) Westerners to accept him. There is some very rabid anti-Trudeau sentiment in the western provinces. It started with his father and frankly, I don't think he had a chance with many people here.
