Largely, because empires/civilizations are constantly collapsing, and everyone thinks that the end of 'their' culture is the end of the world.

Any student of history, even 2000 years ago, could have accurately predicted the end of the Roman Empire. Human empires do not last forever; they're a bit like a manicure.

I have been predicting that we are currently watching the decline and end of the American Empire for some time now.

Since this is in BPoTW and i am the mod here, I am going to ask you to knock it off. Bette is hardly saying anything we don't have a lot of other people saying, including some very educated ones. Stick to the topic at hand and keep the insults to yourself. Next step is a ban from replying in this thread.

And @BetteTheRed do not respond to Mystic, please. I've warned him and I don't want this thread derailed by you two going at each other.

A new heaven and a new earth might arrive at some point in the future. Jesus certainly thought so.

But what about the existing heaven and earth?

We live in this world and experience it. There are many disciplines to help us understand it better. History and geography. Mathematics and science. Philosophy, literature, psychology. The arts.

When it comes to heaven we only have religion. And it doesn't give us much about the existing heaven. God lives there. That's about it.

Christian theology tends to conflate its ideas about an afterlife, a future apocalypse and the kingdom of God.

The One we follow was an apocalyptic preacher so maybe this is not surprising.
 
Does anyone think Jesus meant the Kingdom of God as an ideal for the here and now? I don't think this way myself but I know many liberal Christians do.

In this manner of thinking, the term is often changed to "Kin-dom of God".

Then again, Jesus comes across as almost a communist at times. So who knows?
 
Is communing a kin to socializing? Downright uncivil ... like a pall ... dark ... and a mystery of why they do destructive stuff ...

I was once spoken to over using the word Eris ... which simply means dissonance as it stacks up ... so never avoid stuff that comes up ... all things count no matter how minor they seem ... even minas as negative ... in the minas it goes down badly ... dimples or wrinkles ... avoid the deficiencies on all sides ...
 
Thinking ng some more about heaven. There is a popular view of going there to be with our loved ones when we die. Does anyone see any support in scripture for this?

It reads to me like we are suspended nowhere until the arrival of the Son of man on the clouds. Jesus did tell the thief on the cross He would see him on Paradise that day.

Could it be we go back to the garden of Eden until all things take place?

I don't know this but I've heard heaven is a state of mined ... quiet and still observing ... the great Moe! It is all in myth ... not much to it!

Then there was Moe Cis alternate ... Ephraim of phantom? Ghost of chance ...

It is like the tardigrades in the news recently ... filamentous things that may glow in the dark ... threads said to glow because of intense radiation that causes them to stiffen up ... an anaerobic vs aerobic conflab?

Then as a side thread organo phosphates can affect pro tenacious stuff ... like blue-green and red tides ... that could set off some resting on the stones! It is sophisticated regardless of those that demand simply that they know ... when the cats says doubtful as a tom ... yet still ... exceptions to protocol?

Imagine among all that someone getting trained ... an educational prerequisite? Ammon schists ...
 
Santorini is a long way from Egypt. It is between Greece, Turkey, and Crete. It is a beautiful place. Great bus system. It was quite windy at times when we were there. We stayed one or two nights at a resort with a private pool for each unit. It was too windy and cool to try out the pool. Our daughter recommended the resort, one of the places she visited while waiting for a new passport. Seeing the caldera makes it easy to imagine the incredible force of the explosion.
 
If someone is gravely ill, does expecting their death mean you are against them? People who study the rise and fall of empires do not have to be anti American to speculate about when or how it will collapse.

Yeah, that was quite an eruption. I hope to get there someday. The Greek Islands are definitely on my bucket list.

The distances that trade and diplomacy were being done over in the late Bronze Age were quite remarkable given the naval technology of the era. There is solid archaeological evidence both for Egyptians visiting Mycene and Knossos and for Minoan craftsmen to have been involved in a project in Egypt for Amenhotep III. And for trade among all the major and minor societies in the region. Basically, there was an extensive trade and diplomacy network covering the entire Eastern Mediterranean including the Aegean. The book I mentioned upthread goes through it all.
