Travel sometimes opens the door to musical discoveries and my sojourn in Iceland was no exception. While perusing the website of the famous Blue Lagoon geothermal baths near Keflavik (where the international airport is located) I saw an interview they did with Laufey. She is the daughter of a Icelandic father and a Chinese mother. Her mother is a violinist who played in the Iceland Symphony and her maternal grandfather was a professor at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing so perhaps her being musical is no surprise, but she went in another direction than classical, producing gorgeous vocal jazz (she also plays guitar). She has appeared on Iceland's Got Talent and the local version of The Voice. Laufey now lives in the US after studying at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and has a couple albums out. This past spring, she released a live album that features her singing in front of the Iceland Symphony. Not clear on whether her mother is still playing in the orchestra but still must have been a special moment for the family.

TW: heavy

Ever since I was introduced, I fell down a rabbit hole. I listen to Ren daily. He’s got a wide range of style, genre and mood. And skills - he can sing, rap, play multiple instruments, acts, writes and produces his own music.

He’s from the UK. But he was in Calgary - maybe still is - for medical treatment for a chronic health condition, that he can’t get in UK. I’ve spent quite a bit of time there in my life and I recognized it almost immediately.

I woke up this morning to a new release from Laufey. "Bewitched" is the title track from her next album, which drops September 8.

Another young act with a sophomore album looming is Concrete Castles. The Erie, Pennsylvania-based alt-rockers have already released several singles from the new album and it is looking quite promising, even better than their debut from a couple years ago IMHO.

Members are Audra Miller (vocals), Matt Yost (guitar), and Sam Gilman (drums), all also members of the cover band First to Eleven.

If you can get there this is a YouTube video of Ren - whose music I’ve been listening to a lot lately. He’s giving commentary only here. I love this guy - well, I don’t know him (but he engages in a real and relatable way that makes people feel like we know him) he’s a special person.

I looked it up. This appears to be what was happening. It’s the second time in a couple of days I’ve seen it. I don’t know how to fix it if it happens again.

Never seen it here and I think I read that thread back in April when it happened (was hanging out on XF community pretty regularly back then). Might be on your end. Are you logged into Youtube? Tried dumping cache? I know you're an iPad user and I have no idea how to do that in Safari but it is a common fix in Edge and Chrome (and IE if you go back that far).

Skynet testing out its sentience?

Skynet ... that would be a large spread of what some believe that may not be so and thus basis for BS? Incarnate is also a word about things that appear but are not ... torn between illusion and de Luce IAn ... particles or just bad spots ... Pixels as in blarney? It is all a fog of bad history or nebulae in the head parts ...

Curios or worth query? Quo dead ...????

Just heard this one

By Molotov, a Mexico City rap metal band formed around 1995

I posted the video for Laufey's Bewitched up thread but this acoustic performance with Laufey accompanying herself on guitar is too lovely not to share.

So after touring together this Spring, violinist Mia Asano and bagpiper "Piper Ally" have started a shared YouTube channel for their collaborations and announced another more extensive tour along with their debut album.

Mia has also announced a tour as a guest soloist with metal string act Two Steps From Hell, a collaboration that kicked off last week at the venerable Wacken Open Air rock festival in Germany. Yes, a violinist made her debut at one of the biggest rock and metal festivals in Europe. She was insanely happy, to say the least, since she is into metal in a big way herself.

So it seems I have discovered these two amazing young musicians just as they get rolling in a serious way. This recent release on the Mia x Ally channel is a track from a videogame. Will be interesting to see if the debut album is all covers or whether Ally, who writes some of her own pipe tunes, has come up with some originals for it. And whether she will sing on it, since she has a fairly nice voice that she has used on some of her own recordings.

Heard this one sorta by accident yesterday. CBC has a weekly top 20 show, which is usually just the contemporary top 20. I listen to it, because it's good for me to know what popular music sounds like. But sometimes, they do more 'fun' top 20s. This week's is the top 20 songs with whistling from the past 20 years. #2 was a fun tune by Deep South, a 4-piece band from Regina.

There is a rumour that hell would be more entertaining to humans as they cannot stand perfection ... especially in the silence of heavenly matters!
