And holy wow, there's two of them. Here's Lucy in a duet with Martha, her little sister. Martha was only 11 when they did this so is nowhere near as accomplished as her sister yet (Lucy was 16 here) but I can see potential there.

From the "damn, this is fun" file: Electric strings doing a metal version of the theme from the classic 1990s X-men cartoon. Cellist is Tina Guo, violinist is Mia Asano. They have another video looming as well which pulls in two more Asian Youtube artists.

This song is almost the Platonic ideal of a power ballad. It's by the Danish band Pyramaze with guest singer Melissa Bonny (hit my metal thread for more about her). The band's lead singer Terje Haroy and Melissa are a near perfect fit and the song is just so well written.

I’ve gone down a new British music scene rabbit hole. I have to say, the musicianship and lyricism of some of the new young artists there - even on the pop charts - is top tier compared to what’s been coming out in North America over the past 10, even 20, years. I know, I know that’s probably not true, I have just found a string of interconnected indie musicians (who’ve worked together/ supported each others’ goals) who’ve really impressed me. There’s a revival of some quintessential 90s sounds - and I guess that was my time. Ren, Chinchilla, Venbee - to name three. Though I hesitate to post them because their lyrics, though thought provoking, may be offensive if taken literally or to ears sensitive to certain language. If you are curious, do look them up!

Here are a few less controversial songs. Even they should probably come with a language warning.

This is Venbee, who’s only 23.

This is a beautiful song. The video was recorded, low budget, live in a basement. This is one continuous take. Chinchilla is fabulous in her own right. A performance artist with a soulful voice and great outfits (she’s taken costume design and she produces her own music). She isn’t done up in this one except for her long claw nails lol.

I like the sound of this one. It has a bit of western twang, ironically. They’re all unique/ original/ and sometimes weird. With a “woman who doesn’t take crap” vibes. I can picture this one playing in a small local bar somewhere in the UK, and being popular. I can hear it being a radio hit anywhere, actually.

She’s definitely different. Catchy - but not everyone’s cup of tea. There’s a lot of performance art involved in both Ren’s and Chinchilla’s work. It’s fun if taken as that.

In interviews, she’s so friendly, pleasant and genuine - with a great sense of style to boot. She’s not exactly like her persona, but she does seem empowered.

I’m impressed because they are regular (but gifted) people, they’ve found a back-route through social media - producing their own music and getting on Spotify, iTunes - skipping the record producers. Fans are watching their rise and participating in real time, and they keep it real. The whole “larger than life star” thing isn’t so much a priority. They’re doing it with tongue n’ cheek. Being independent they can be a bit bolder, less censored about what they put out, too.

The acoustic version of Lowdown, Venbee and Dan Fable is beautiful, imo. I love all of their voices. The accents enhance the sound. It’s a sad song.

(It’s not only the musicianship, but also the creativity, ingenuity and production value that impresses me. They’re doing it themselves, and teaming up with friends - most often with limited budgets, and doing a bang-up job.)

Voces8 are primarily known for Baroque through Modern choral music, but their occasional forays into popular music are always a treat. Here they take on a song by American songwriter Jerome Kern.

The electric guitar is usually heard in the context of a rock or other popular music band. But some of the better players do put out solo performances, just guitar and maybe a rhythm section. Here's an electric guitar duet from two guitarists, Sophie Lloyd and Cole Rolland, who have built careers on YouTube but are easily up there with their peers who have taken more conventional paths. Some amazing guitar work here.

And if the name Sophie Lloyd sounds familiar, she was the guitarist for Machine Gun Kelly on his last tour and rumours had them hooking up, causing a blowup in his relationship with actress Megan Fox. Sophie has said her relationship with Kelly was purely professional and I'll take her word over the rumour mongers.
