Room For All

Bon Matin! Guten Morgen! Good morning! As we think about surgeries postponed, triage protocols in ICU's, an election just over the weekend, and a myriad of other topics, the coffee cart is offering space, comfy chairs, and hot beverages to facilitate those chats. Enjoy.

Interesting .. a weak end for polity! Later it is said ... as they cannot abide with promises in their abode ... virtue is deficient in this realm! Get used to it ... appears as the norm in dystopia ... that's here now ...

Good morning. It is raining here and there are rainfall warnings. We need it. I have to go and get my routine CT this morning. Friends are in the area and we may have a visit. Other than that, it will be a chill day

It's lovely here today. The moon has been close to the horizon, making it appear large and orangish. Gorgeous!

Misty here earlier, now just cloudy. After a crazy day at work yesterday that ended with me having to switch computers, I am hoping to actually do what I was supposed to do yesterday.

The appointment that was rescheduled while Chemguy was getting results, rescheduled again on their end die to needing a covid test.

Good morning! Happy Saturday! For weather c0nditions, for rescheduling frustrations, and all the other things that life throws at us, let us pause awhile and gather round the coffee cart. All is ready, help yourself.

Hopefully an option for a cancellation list.
I had cataract surgery for both eyes (on different days, of course). It was not painful or difficult or long. Praying for you.

I‘ve got something worse now, a detached retina (I’m just turned 70, in case people are wondering). I read that being near-sighted is a risk factor (I inherited near sightedness from my mom. She did not get any detachments or tears). Apparently your eye isn’t the right shape, making the detachment more likely. It’s not as common as cataracts

I got emergency surgery on it, but I don’t know it will turn out. (It was a lot longer). Right now, I might as well be blind in that eye,. I can see lights but shapes are indistinct. Im telling myself that as long as I can see from the other eye, I’m OK.

I would not attempt to drive. Hope you don’t have to wait much longer, CG.

Busy day today. The co-chair of the Outreach Team and I (chair of Faith Formation & Christian Education) got co-opted at the July Board meeting to organize the Welcome Back BBQ, which ended up being today, after some waffling of dates. Well, it was nice to get to know J___ better, as we planned (she'd migrated to us from a closed Barrie area church), but man, lot of work. Don't mind the planning on an outside balcony, over lemonaid, but the e-mails/trails, and the divvying up of responsibilities, the shopping, the prep, the clean-up, and I'm tired.

Don't get me wrong, we had plenty of help at critical moments. But as organizer, you are responsible for start to finish. And I was the way youngest volunteer, except for CJ who was a wonder for chair moving (and my slightly younger friend R, who was mainly busy with the choir).

That does sound very busy Bette! Rest up! Is your church good at keeping detailed records for such events - or is it a re-inventing at each opportunity?
My current church has an annual 'chicken BBQ' in Sept - apparently they now just hire a company to provide everything; people pay a per/person or per/family fee. It was also today, following an outdoor service - BBQ was take-away rather than eat together. I wasn't there. Apparently about a hundred showed up for the outdoor service.

Well, we're in a dilemma, at present. There's things for which we have super records, like the annual Strawberry Shortcake (in March), where we use Ontario strawberries, picked and quickly frozen, by us, the summer before. We have lists of workgroups for that, complete with vendors for cakes, cream, etc., and previous big buyers (like a couple of seniors' homes, a school or two).

But for general "social" stuff, we always had a "Congregational Life Team". This has turned into the "impossible to fill" team. I actually sat near the last four members of the last Congregational Life Team today, and although they were friendly, loving, etc., not a ONE of them had anything to do with today's work, no volunteering, or last minute helping, or anything. We're in bigger danger than we think, just because of the sheer age of the congregation. It's still a decent size, they are still passionate about social justice, but they are old and tired.

Fortunately, my stalwart secret ally Jack had an idea of volume, and acquired/stashed enough meat and buns to step up. And ran the BBQ. He was pretty amazing.

Would not surprise me if this is the way of the future for churches. So much work goes into planning traditional church events and it seems like fewer and fewer people want to take these things on.

Just wonder how much “profit” fundraising do you get that way. Unless it’s just for the fellowship and you can keep the cost reasonable.

Good morning, all! It is election day. 24 hours hence, the lawn signs will vanish and the political ads will cease. Something to look forward to! In the meantime, the coffee cart is ready, for discussions on fundraising, politics, theology, and whatsoever else comes to mind.

Yes, good question. Fundraising and fellowship seem to get intertwined in churches. Not sure this is the best way of doing things but it certainly has a long history.

The church potluck I guess is an exception to the above. It doesn't have a purpose beyond socialization or at most, encouraging everyone to attend the annual meeting.

Wondering how potlucks will fare in the future now that we are all more tuned in to public health concerns.
