Novel Coronavirus

Which is not something should accept. We do not live under a totalitaran regime (or supposedly) and the authorities we elected and were hired by those who were elected have a responsibility to not only keep us safe from a nasty virus but to limit the infringement upon our human rights. In fact, the latter is even, IMO, a more important bigger picture consideration. They can dish out homeowner credits and landlord credits and up EI benefits...they can spend more on wide and accurate testing to limit the fallout. It’s a long term disaster that will, in the end, have little to do with the actual virus in the long run. Public health officials have a responsibility for social health, too. I worry about kids and what they are absorbing through this about life, and the depravation of normal behaviour.
Emm, kimmio, you were the one wanting immunity tests. I am sure nobody here meant that should be done secretly while you are having other tests done, but it could be one screening WHEN you are having bloodwork done- if you so request.

I'd rather they require more testing than require this. You need a license to drive to prove you're a safe driver for example. Millions are expected to do a drivers test. You are required to do a census...people wanted that. So once they've tested a large enough sample they can make better decisions that don't involve flattening everyone's human rights and limiting their choices so extremely.

There's a lot that concerns me about being Australian - but our blunt "a spade is just a bloody shovel" approach works well when it comes to pandemics.
When the world was hit by the HIV epidemic we approached it pragmatically. We were one of the first countries to give out free needles to drug addicts and speak up about wearing condoms. Every public lavatory door had displayed factual notices about what you could/should do to prevent the spread of HIV.

I'm pleased to see that, apart from a monumental stuff up with cruise ships, we are handling this present crisis well.
Folks can give opinions until they're blue in the face - but it's time to put on our big girl panties and face the terrible reality of this disease.

This, more than any other approach, will contribute to making us more public spirited.

My husband was out of the city yesterday. My sister's kids were out playing today.
Self isolation is obviously different.
Are you guys in the same province? NS clearly has some lock down conditions- all parks and trails are.closed, no more than five people in anyone spot, beaches closed, and people are not to drive their cars for pleasure. “ If you drive to a place to go walk, you are going to far” according to the Premier. Private sales , like over kjiji, are no longer allowed. Yes, it is very limiting and has a lot of consequences for people‘s lives. But- I work in a hospital and if this can prevent my fellow physicians and nurses from having to make decisions that will haunt them for the rest of their lives, I will try to support local and hang in there.
I think, this thread is going in circles. I would like to see people posting how they or others support their community and make the best out of it.

Today 81 total cases (up two in several days, 11 hospitalizations in the Island Health region. 794,000 ppl (not 795,000 my error)

As of yesterday 35 had fully recovered (and that number would be staggered according to earlier and later cases). Maybe there have been more recoveries not updated yet. That's 46 ppl on the Island with covid now - actually minus 2 deaths (not 3 but 2, my error again) so 44 active cases - 11 are in hospital. 33 are at home quarantined. That's not a lot of people out of the total population. That's not a huge surge in hospitalization as compared to any other reasons for hospitalization.

No I am in BC and Chemgal is in Alberta.

People can still walk in the park but can't congregate or use playgrounds, tennis and basketball courts etc. I can't go through a park unless there's a paved path though. Hard to social distance unless it's wide. As with sidewalks which are mostly narrow here.

Yes and yes. Breathing problems, not getting enough air is one of the most terrifying symptoms maybe worse than
pain. In NS, after having a brief period of only one designated visitor allowed per patient, we are now completely shut to all visitors, except for the dying. I am not sure how this would apply to people dying of Covid ( NS just had their first death yesterday). It is not just terrible for Covid patients, everyone else is suffering as well.
I am equally worried about the potential for being the one dying alone as I am worried about my loved ones being alone in the hospital in times like that. And please, I don’t want to hear that those measurements are too restrictive, after all, we only had one death. It’s ok to be afraid, but it needs some self awareness to go with it to recognize the weird theories that come out of that fear not being accepted and dealt with.

I'm in Alberta, but I do hear of what's happening in BC too. Less of anything east of ON.
Here many parks are closed, but some are still open, no playground equipment is to be used though. The legal limit is 15 people for gatherings. Nothing about pleasure drives. Services like Uber have restrictions, such as 1 passenger or passengers all from the same household or else distance between the passengers (a van perhaps could meet this) and no passengers in the front seat.
Private sales are allowed.

Sorry, I can't get to the short video. For those interested in aspects of the long one, there are timeframes listed, so one can jump to what they want to see.

I tried @PilgrimsProgress. It seems to be above my skills. Perhaps someone more qualified than I can do it. @ChemGal @Mendalla
I shared it on Facebook (the short relevant video) so if you go to my page on Facebook you might be able to view it?
If so, someone might find a way to share it here?

But having coffee with a friend can't happen. No handshakes, fist bumps, hugs or shoulder taps or any kind of normal things like that. I'm not a big hugger but I need one from time to time. At least a hand on the shoulder from people who care , just acknowledging I'm a human, I am not a robot. Things we take for granted but we also need. This social distance-love thing isn't healthy long term and it's starting to be long. I'm an adult I can take it, but I know parents social distancing with their 11 yr old at home and they're a huggy family. It does hurt me some though.

See, I wouldn't want to do private sales like Varage or Craigslist, etc. (Not actual garage sales though, right?) That seems riskier than meeting for a coffee with a friend at a table outside (it's spring weather here).

Quarantine facilities ...

7 The Minister may by order designate any place in Canada as a quarantine facility and amend, cancel or reinstate the designation.

Duty to provide ...

8 (1) Any person in charge of a place shall, at the request of the Minister, provide that place to the Minister if, in the opinion of the Minister, the temporary use of the place as a quarantine facility is necessary to protect public health.

Refusal to be screened ...

(2) If a traveller refuses to be screened with the screening technology and the person using it is not a screening officer or quarantine officer, the person shall immediately inform a screening officer or quarantine officer of the refusal.

Isolation ...

(2) The screening officer may, without directives from a quarantine officer, isolate the traveller, individually or within a group, until the traveller is assessed by a quarantine officer.

Arrest without warrant ...

18 A peace officer may, at the request of a screening officer or quarantine officer, arrest without a warrant and bring to a quarantine officer any traveller who the peace officer has reasonable grounds to believe has refused to be isolated or refuses to comply with a measure under subsection 15(3).

Order to comply with treatment or measure ...

26 If a quarantine officer, after the (enforced) medical examination of a traveller, has grounds to believe that the traveller has or might have a communicable disease or is infested with vectors, or has recently been in close proximity to a person who has or might have a communicable disease or is infested with vectors, the quarantine officer 'may order' the 'traveller' to comply with treatment or any other measure for preventing the introduction and spread of the communicable disease.

So ... forced medical intervention and we are a few pages into this 45 page document.

What is a traveller?

By my interpretation ... Anyone who is moving around anywhere in the country by any means ... driving your car or bicycle or scooter or walking to the store included.

We are under medical martial law.
You can like it or not.
I do not like it.
