TRUMP - Some people think......... How do you feel?

I'd love to see someone around 40 who is an unconventional candidate be successful.

Closest match who is still in the game would be Pete Buttegieg. Yes, a middle-aged white male, but he's only 37 and definitely cut from a different mold than Bernie and Joe.

The problem with looking for another, younger democrat is that the Democrats as a body are not very different from the Republicans. The reality of American politics that both Republicans and Democrats are largely owned by big money. And that's been the case going all the way back to the origins of American "democracy".

The American revolution was not to create a democracy. It was fought so the wealthy could break away from British control to steal all the land that belonged to the indigenous peoples. It is not a coincidence that George Washington was probably the biggest landowner in the U.S. What followed was the mass murder of indigenous peoples - almost to their extinction. Indeed, many of the poor in the revolutionary U.S. never even got the right to vote.

The purpose of the civil war was not to free the slaves. That didn't become a purpose for it until a year after the war started. It was really a war between northern manufacturers who wanted to keep Britain out of the farm machinery business so they could monopolize it. The South fought to maintain imports from cheaper British sources.

Every American president has been the defender of the wealthy from the start. Offhand, I can't think of any exception. That's why the U.S. has only two parties.

Think of the poem on the Statue of Liberty. 'bring me your poor, your hungry, yearning to be free....." American children are still taught that is what the U.S. is about. In fact, the U.S. severely cut immigration just a few years after the statue and it's poem were built. It is now one of the world's worst countries for social services to its people.

Another person @Mendalla is Andrew Yang.

Is he realistically a long haul candidate, though? He is only polling at 5% in Iowa and New Hampshire, well behind the top four and roughly tied with Amy Klobuchar. Bloomberg is lower but is dripping with cash so can hold on even if he doesn't do well in the early primaries.

Warren is very much in the race (one of the four polling in double digits) but you said around 40 and she is 70. And I did include her in my lost upthread.

I agree @Mendalla. Frankly it's sad that the old white guys are the ones who are polling the best. At the same time, historically there have been presidents who were polling so low at this point in the process. Wasn't Obama one of them?

The USA is a military-intelligence empire.

Does it really make any difference which presidential candidate is elected?

When you’ve got a rotten system, it really doesn’t make any difference who’s 'theoretically' running it.

Yes it does. It depends who makes it better or worse. It's always people, not magic inevitability.

Buttigeig is polling around 0 percent with black voters. Andrew Yang and Buttigeig are stiff and dry and do not stand a chance in the ring with Trump. Yang does not have the rhetorical skill. He clams up at tough questions and will not challenge the status quo on healthcare. His words are empty. "Asian guy who likes math." - is not good enough to run on. Trump would wipe the floor with him. Buttigeig is too hawkish on the Iran crisis, and he's, like Yang, also robotic. I haven't seen anything from him that doesn't feel prepackaged (and his eyes give me the creeps incidentally - cold).

Bernie, even though he's a senior, is mentally sharp as a whip. He could do his job from a hospital bed if it ever came to that - and I expect he likely would. He would also pick a good VP aligned with his policies.

Biden is losing his marbles. I think he'd be a dangerous president (not as dangerous as Trump). He's stuck in the past and is no longer quick witted enough. But he has support due to familiarity.

Warren is good, she'd make a decent president, but she cannot win in the ring against Trump's difficult personality. That's the biggest obstacle in winning the election and only Bernie can do that - he has both the right kind of chutzpah, and good policies - in my opinion.

Warren seems like the most sensible candidate to me. But Americans are less ready for a woman than they were for a black man, so this won't float. It is so tempting, and so unfair, to think they're a nation of idiots. However, I despair of them.

Appearing too sensible will lose to erratic Trump. Bernie is just as sensible in his policies (that seem risky only because their country is entrenched in bad ones) but rhetorically firey enough to win. It's not that Americans aren't ready for a female president. It's that the current president (and much of the GOP party itself) is anti-female and somebody needs to actually beat him in the election. It's not as though he's ever going to play fair, or play honestly. Bernie knows to stay a step ahead of him. And opposite New Yorkers duelling it out - I just think that is what needs to happen for the election, if they're smart (not counting Bloomberg trying to buy his way in - Bernie worked for this).

Trump is a diabolical force. We can't figure out if he's an idiot or an evil genius - but he's absolutely a force to be reckoned with. I think only Bernie has the requisite wits about him to do that.

I continue to be amazed at his steadfast supporters. Trump keeps talking fake new and his supporters believe him, but do not believe 'facts' as reported by the news. You know -- the facts that say Trump is lying or exaggerating or just plain boasting. Diabolical is a good word for him. My New Jersey cousins are going to see him speak, and one of the cousins was so excited she posted: I feel like I'm going to see a rock star! My otherwise sane relatives LOVE him. And my son-in-law LOVES him. He has them hoodwinked.

One of my close family members, too. Fortunately he's Canadian so it's just talk - but it is bewildering and heartbreaking to me.

His supporters live in a fabricated propaganda universe, so they are not receiving news.

The American mainstream media loves to sensationalize and they shape opinion deeply, rather than just report the facts. But what Fox does is several degrees worse. They're disgusting. They're an authoritarian state media wing - with "entertaining" loud and proud American window dressing. They're just screaming lies everyday.

The only Fox commentator, of all people, who's been somewhat of an honest journalist lately, is Geraldo Reveira. I think maybe he remembered his journalistic roots. He may not keep getting invited back on Fox because of it, though. The truth can't get through if people are prevented from hearing it.

Trump's support is heavily evangelist. These are churches whose members are really interested only in being saved and raised to stand around on clouds singing praises to the lord forever and ever. To each his own. They look forward eagerly to the last days because they are going to heaven and we aren't. Ha! Ha! Many, probably most, believe that Trump was actually sent by God to take us to the last days. (They are quite captivated by their own myths and their complete failure to understand Christianity.

If he appears like an idiot it's because we expect certain standards...but...If Trump were stupid he wouldn't be in office, he wouldn't be able to trick people at every turn and abuse their Constitution. Con artists are atypical, unethical, not stupid.

Sure joke about him - we need to, to stay sane. But concluding that he's stupid and that an obviously more educated person, anyone who appears more intellectual, can beat him - won't help anything.
