I don't miss the cold. I'll take the rain even though we've been getting generous amounts for awhile now

Alberta was quite ahead of the curve when it was legalized. They had legal outlets ready to go when it waa legalized. I'm sure @ChemGal would find some in her community.
Yes, there are lots of them around, so was surprised to hear the suggestion was to buy online. I haven't kept up with all the different products, I know there was a delay in the accessibility of edibles for example, not sure if they are in stores now or not.

Supposed to be in Red Deer but I haven't heard of other places yet

They just hit licensed stores in Ontario this week but as, with weed itself, there are supply chain issues causing shortages.

We are having a snow storm coming in tomorrow- so I took the day off- having to spend 11 days of vacation before the end of March. Since I am not ready to shovel snow yet, a friend will clear my driveway in the evening to be ready for work on Thursday. Finally will have time to take down the Last of my Christmas decorations.

Christmas decorations are staying up a bit longer...getting ready to go to the library craft afternoon.

In a-historic fashion, I got my tree all down and swept up/organized yesterday (my daughter is mystified as to how this tree has shed significant volumes of plastic over 22 years and still looks as good - not great - it's an old fake tree - as ever). Still has to go out to the garage, and I need to consolidate some Xmas boxes, but overall, I'm pleased. I'm not a resolution maker, and this initiative pre-dates the new year, but I've decided that I have to make some order out of chaos.

Also, got very bad news from plumber today. Basement floor needs to come up in laundry room, tree root has broken a pipe. There goes a couple of years' vacation money and a big credit card hit while I try and figure out how to juggle this. Reminds me of the real downside of home ownership. And fits in with the idea of trying to organize/de-clutter this mess.

They do. I asked about taking down the tree that is surely the culprit (a 45 year old locust), and he said it was too late now. I am rethinking a medium sized hibiscus (maybe 7-8 years old), that's quite near the house; maybe I'll just let the grape vine take over that corner. There's also two smoke bushes, but they're not large, and in fact, I lost a significant portion of the bigger of the two last year and they're closer to the sidewalk, so I think they're okay. It's a very interesting lesson into where to plant trees.

The actual damage to the basement will be minimal, in that it's an unfinished laundry room and the break is under there, according to his camera. There's a lot of crap that needs to be moved out of it, though, and I've been working on that, a half hour visit and sort at a time, for much of the day. It's just that two days labour, equipment, cement, etc., costs almost as much as the new furnace did 3 years ago...and the 15 year old roof is not going to last forever, either. I rent my basement room to an older woman I used to work with; I charge her really not much more than the additional utilities and maintenance cost me, and she can't afford any more, as she's been artificially "retired" from her long term part time job, she's only 62, and has only a tiny pension from her late husband to live on. *sigh* And I've had to turn down extra hours this week because of calling/waiting for/supervising plumbers... grrrrrr....

Can the older woman supervise the plumber?

Sorry to hear about the root problem Bette. Neighbour had a similar issue about two years ago - big mess with about 6" of water in the basement - fortunately clear groundwater, no sewage involved. But still - huge job to clear stuff out 7 repair all the damage - fortunately insurance covered the bulk of it.

I hear you about home ownership - we got news we will need a new furnace this year ... goodbye to at least $5K. Hopefully we will hang in there until spring! Tax time is coming & I will have something to pay this year - have no idea how much tho, as this is my first year of retirement - so that will also be an interesting spring hit to the bank account. Sigh.

Yeah, but see it this way- you can paint the walls the colour you like and when something has to be fixed, you don’t wait two to six weeks until the landlord gets it done. You also don’t have to go to court to get it done.
I have had only one landlord in my life who was quick at fixing things within days.
My neighbours who are renting, have been calling all the time and living without working washer for six weeks. Similar with the dishwasher. I fixed the leaking toilet tank plug for them, since it was under $10 and the toilet flushed every few minutes.
And: you can have as many furry friends as you like!
