I am pretty sure I read that one. I think we did it for book study in one of my former congregations.

The book that really had an impact on me was Marcus Borg's Heart of Christianity.

I have tried reading some of Borg's other material but nothing else has touched me so deeply.

Marcus Borg it's a great example of not knowing the true God without the Holy Spirit you just make up your own mind of who you think God is, his books reflected his un belief
 
Marcus Borg, rest his soul, was a Lutheran pastor. He had quite strong, and well-argued beliefs about Godde, but he had a strong mystical tendency. Do you know that he would never allow a participant in his workshops who hadn't got there early enough for his 5-minute silent meditation? Said it set the spiritual energy for the discussion. I follow this same practice, although my meditation length is 3 minutes.
 
He wasn't a Lutheran pastor. He was a theologian/ scholar of Episcopalian persuasion, I think.

I saw him speak like live. It was interesting. He was very good at clarifying historical meanings and interpretations of bible passages.

Actually his books reflected a very deep belief and commitment. Just because he had the temerity to see God differently than you see God doesn't mean he was not a believer.

Yes it does , because Marcus doesn't see God at all he believes that he's merely a projection that humanity places on the cosmos but that God doesn't actually exist which by definition makes him an atheist. Marcus has the same belief structure as John Dominic crossan, doesn't believe in a physical Resurrection doesn't believe in miracles and why because God doesn't really exist he's simply a projection .

And your pastors and teachers use Christian and God language too. You take for granted that they are teaching sound theology - when that is questionable. Did you hear him say he believes we are in God the way fish are in water? Did you hear him say he can't 'not' believe in God?
 
Thank you for posting the video. It brings me back into the presence of Marcus Borg, who I have met three or four times in person. Beginning with Rescuing the Bible..., I believe I have read all or most of his books. I love his theology. It speaks to me, and reflects my belief and my journey.

Borg's deep faith and wisdom is evident in his words. His love for God and creation (the world and its peoples – his neighbour), omesthrough for me.

We just did it for book club ... some took it as it appeared and some looked deep into it for meaning. None the less you can bet some were pissed enough thta we read such questionable literature that it caused their serenity great dissonance in the study.

The studious sometimes get tossed from studies ... unknown things being uncovered are scary to those that believe appearance is all there is ...

Keep up the good appearances folks ... don't wonder about nothing! The appearance folks will get yah ...
 
Essence is an attribute that may be attached to the physical incarnation ... a thing that appears as it may not be!

Differentiates between appearance and what it means to yah. Some say reality means nothing due to lack of understanding attached ... a consequence of some church leaders that follow the rule that the common folks should not know ... for some mysterious reason of their own conjecture !

Sort of a Trump impression that all that he doesn't understand is unreal ... causing the WH a great deal of stress and insecurity! Thus all information other than his own is wrong ... sorry to suspect something is wrong with what some folks believe couldn't change ... then it creeps!

Some people believe what they learned at age 8-10 cannot change with alternate education of things out there provided for testing and rethinking!

And an atheist preaching in a Church which says it believes in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and calls itself a Christian Church is a big Slap in the Face to God and is so disrespectful and the height of not only Mocking God but is blasphemy

They believe the spirit is like saying Elvis is still alive we remember his life in spirit, not no actual spirit exists, just memory.

So Marcus & Crossan, believe that Christianity is a good moral standard to live by , they use God language, but then they evacuate what the words mean in biblical times , in a Christian senses and what they meant in a Jewish sense .

BUT because they use Christian Godly language, people who cannot decern , listen.

me Listening to what they say and believe, Kinda, like me Listening what you say and believe, in the realm of the spirituality of course, , the difference with me is, I'm very skeptical of what people say and believe, why?, well because we have 2 basic types of theologians, spirit-filled ones and non spirit filled ones .

Both grps uses the same basic book, both grps uses the same God language, but both grps come out with very different conclusions as to the reality of God/Jesus/Miracles/Events.
