white rice.

White rice is something I can't really get away from. Chinese wife prefers it to brown because that's what they eat over there (the missing nutrients come from other sources for them). She's compromised by doing a mixture of white and brown but if we have that and some straight white, she'll head for the straight white while I take the mixture (I actually like brown as it has a bit of flavour to it).

From a digestion pov, you're better to mix up your grains. Give those intestinal flora a wide range of grains to snack on.

I'm very fond of some of the rice/grain mixtures they carry in my local Bulk Barn store. Most of them have a couple of different kinds of rice, plus some lentils/seeds/alt grains like millet.

Happy new year all. Given the 3 turkey dinners and holiday treats I'm pleased to say that my weight is down from early Dec. Down 3 lbs so just under 1 lb a week weight loss. I'm pleased. Now I'll increase my exercise and that should speed up weight loss.

That's amazing Tabitha!! Well done. I've been staying away from my scales ... but must get back to doing more exercise. I've been a bit of a cold weather wuss lately, which does not bode well for the winter.

I'm staying away from the scale too. I wonder why reasonably intelligent people can' (or won't?) resist the temptation to eat fudge and chocolate and mince tarts and......

2 lbs of the 4 I gained on my cruise are gone. Two more to go. That's the easy part, though. It's starting to work on going lower once I get back to my pre-holiday weight that will be the challenge.

I'm busy trying to put *on* weight. I have a squirrel metabolism, which is great in many ways, but if I'm sick for a while, or don't eat properly, people start wondering if I have a serious illness or an eating disorder. Working on renovations and then being sick before Christmas, I was down to high school weight, where I haven't been since my last bout of flu, about 4 years ago.

I'm up 5 lbs since Christmas, which was badly needed. I was joking on Facebook just the other day that I'm starting to win the fight with my tapeworm again.

For reference, I'm 5'10". Not short, not exactly tall. My typical weight since my early 20s has been 160 lbs. My highest weight was 175, staying with Carter for months in Bloorview and eating like crap. Before Christmas, I was down to 145. Now I'm above 150 again, and rising.

I have to lose weight - but more importantly I have to get in shape. I've never been in g reat shape and have been over weight or obese all my life. I lost a bunch last year but put a lot back on. I had been really training last winter but ended up physically hurt a few times and fell off the treadmill/bike routine.

Not sure what approach I am going to take - I like Dr Yoni Friedhoff's approach of just eating enough to make my life enjoyable - kind of an anything in moderation type of deal. We have a new kitchen now so that's no longer an excuse to eating poorly.

I'm thinking of a fit bit or the garmin one (it looks really interesting and is at Costco) - but I'm not sure.

I'm hoping to do the walk/run for Women's Mental Health again this year - I was one of the slowest last year at 46 minutes for 5km and I would like to break that, but that may not be realistic.

It sounds like most of you are really on-track to being healthy which is what we all need.

This is really where I am at, too. I don't need to lose that much weight (5-7 lbs should do) but just get fit so my various conditions don't turn into serious problems. My diabetes and hypertension are "borderline" right now and I'd like to keep it that way or even get the numbers down.

I have a Garmin Vivofit & I like it for tracking amount of activity I do. (and just in case you're interested ... today I've done 7,835 steps - over my daily goal by 1,274 steps! yay! my goal numbers actually went down last week when I was being a Xmas slug)

I heard something on the radio awhile ago and it makes a lot of sense. Most people weigh themselves on Monday after the weekend you have probably cheated a little bit or possibly more so you are some times disappointed. They said to weigh yourself Friday morning when you see the success you have had during the week you are less likely to cheat and ruin your progress over the weekend. I have been doing this for awhile now and it does work, I gave my self a break for December but I will go back to it this Friday.

my husband is 6' and weighed 132 when we met. He didn't put on weight until his 50's, and even then, he is around 150.
My youngest is 6'3' and weights about 140.

My oldest takes after my side of the family. He works out, he is muscular, is 6' tall, but, will never be able to just eat like his dad and brother.

That's interesting. As a kid mom fixed white rice and with enough butter and sugar I liked it fine. Dad hated it. Apparently he had his fill of it in Vietnam. He'd put gravy or something on it to cover the taste. Since I've been grown I don't think I've even just had plain white rice though I love rice pilaf, dirty rice, some kind of wild or brown rice and I even discovered that I like red beans and rice. It is a lot more flavorful.
I had always been led to believe though that white rice was purely an American thing. I heard a story about the Japanese internment camps we had in WWII. Apparently there was an issue with malnutrition at first and a nutritionist was called in to figure it out. It turns out they were given large amounts of white rice because it was assumed that Asian people eat a lot of rice. The thing is, white rice is bleached and has lost most of it's nutritional value. They then switched to natural rice and the issue was resolved. That's how I'm remembering the story anyway, someone please correct me if I'm wrong.
