that's a huge age range - I suppose quite different teaching methods would be required. Is there a standard sort of curriculum that you use or do you make up your own lessons?

There are a number of different student books and workbooks (for most of the kids, I teach from a series called, "Let's Go" by Oxford Press). These various books I supplement with games, role-playing, activities and songs from a number of different sources. And, sometimes we just chat.

What madness is this? At Emart (Korea's answer to Wal-Mart), kids will only meet Santa Claus half of the time when they visit the North Pole Castle. The other half of the time, they will meet "Santarina." That's right, not Mrs. Claus, Santarina. As Santa is the male personification of the Christmas spirit, Santarina is the female one.

To make matters worse, Emart is giving kids ice cream cones and balloons rather than candy canes.

This is the store next to our apart in Suwon. It is filled with games to play. However, I've never actually seen anyone in there playing them.

Nor have I ever seen staff in there. It's an oddity.

Not worse - just different. Embrace the opportunity to experience it. Did you get to visit with Santarina or sit on her knee? I'd like to see a photo

Imagine if Sante and Santianna were to get it together and generate sprouts ... spoor?

The seed of levity? Begins in the dark mysterious zone ... elastic, etc. Snappy ...

Finally saw some Christmas lights and heard some outdoor Christmas music. This is in Suwon.20181222_212846.jpg

Is it some kind of child trap a la Pleasure Island?
What do the kids turn into? Hogs? Mmm...pork buns.

Have you seen any Virtual Reality game stores? I've seen 2 so far in my area.

Whose tradition?

Excellent question Redbaron. It is so easy for us to assume that 'our' way is superior to another cultures way. My first Christmas dinner in Canada included something that I found totally bizarre - jellied fruit salad. I was told 'everyone' has jelly salad with turkey. Hmm...I'm pretty sure there are some Canadians who don't have turkey for Christmas dinner - and even more who don't serve dessert with the main meal.

Whose tradition?
Perhaps Jae's tradition? Is Jae allowed to have a preferences? Or are there only a specific list of allowed preferences that he is allowed to have? Still loving your stache :3

Then again I don't think we should or even b compelled to b everything to everyone. Esp since we don't, in the main, get to choose our likes and dislikes and values and preferences and disgusts etc etc etc. Even tho I think believing in howmoesexuality is a sin is ridiculous, there r peeps who do believe that. And even tho I know there r cultures who love eatin grubs, I don't think I'll ever love them.

And in a certain lens, Santarina can be viewed as misogynist (very skinny cis woman).

And so forth.

We Liberals and Progressives should b aware of our need to make our particular values, likes, dislikes, etc Universal, because they aren't.
And it can b good 2 think and talk aboot these things. Ty to the Baron for encouraging ideas to b knocked forth from some of us.

Keel it up, folks! :3

Just came from an interesting experience - a funeral in Korea. When we got to the church, we had to take off our shoes. Many people were dressed in black - and many of the deceased's male family members also wore white arm bands on one side. One of the first things we did when we arrived was to go into a midsized room where there was a picture of the deceased on the front wall. We each picked up a white flower that was on a table near the front and moved it to be closer to the picture. We then left and went to a food service area, but didn't eat. When there were enough people gathered there, we moved back into the midsized room for a service (there was more than one). Sitting on the floor, we joined in praying and singing (or, at least, most did. I prayed independently and quietly hummed the songs). There was also, I guess, a eulogy. After the service, we went back to the food area where we enjoyed pork, fish, rice, kimchi, other side dishes and beverages.
