how can they tell the rockets r natural?
btw check out the Arthur C Clark foundations podcast with Roger Penrose where he spends 8 hours talking aboot his take on a cyclic big bang

They can't. They are only hypothesizing that that is what's happening given that it was accelerating.

I'll check that out but given it's age (Clarke has been dead for a decade so it has to be at least that old) it is possible that some of it may have been superseded (correct use of the word) by subsequent research or theories. Cosmology has been a bit nuts in the last few decades.

Semi-theology ... when we don't know much definitively! Resembles a demure ... or taking a chance with God ... a vacant love?

These can suffer a coming out or emergent state ... de boo taunting the darker characters as bell ringing?

Why are scientists playing around with a 12 ton sphere of molten sodium?

Because SCIENCE!

They are trying to figure the details of how Earth's magnetic field is generated. Why? Because we need to be able to predict things like when the field is going to flip in order to prepare for these events. Flips happen every now and then and consist of the magnetic poles moving to new positions. North becomes South and vice versa. The concern is that the field will weaken during the flip, allowing more electromagnetic radiation through, which could damage electronics, power grids, etc., esp. if a major solar event happens when the field is weakened.

So not only is this experiment weird and cool, but it could save our sorry little butts some day.

Oh, and for the record, the magnetic field actually has been weakening for about a century, esp. in a region known as the South Atlantic Anomaly. We don't know why, another reason for this research. Could be a flip coming or could be some other cycle in the Earth.

This happens regularly in the human area between the ears ... if it didn't we wouldn't have such array of extremism everywhere ... especially in position of powerful poles ... it can resemble religious faith! And then it changes ... as the bible stated learn the stranger parts ... but we don;t due to stone-ism and fixation! There are various attributes that cause addictions to one facet ...

Hues cultivated this wilder strain ... like Rufus (Rue Phus) that one dancing up there in the heat of the darkness?

Then light entered through the Ayers ... yes-men the Leer?

Did you know that on Jupiter and Saturn it rains diamonds?

It's actually controversial, but some models say it could happen. Uranus and Neptune are actually better candidates for diamonds from my reading. Thing is, if we could actually access those diamonds, the value of diamonds would probably go down due to excessive supply (well, assuming we could avoid having the De Boers cartel get control of them)..

Diamond drizzle forecast for Saturn and Jupiter

Remember my dinosaur avatar from early this year? There's been another new genus and species discovered in the increasingly complex ankylosaurid family tree. The article talks more about that complexity but, basically, they originated in Asia but here in North America there seems to have been a couple different lineages that came over from Asia at different times. And to think that when I was first into dinos (at the ripe old age of 6 or so), we just had ankylosaurus. Period. Though I did start to learn about the existence of other related species probably in my teens.

PS. I drove through the area where this fossil was found (Grand Staircase Escalante) when we toured Utah last year. Had no idea there were bone beds in the area, though.

Years ago, Dr. Who did a movie-length story called The Waters of Mars. Guess what? We have fairly solid evidence of liquid water on Mars as of today. It's not certain, just a high probability, but it's the best evidence we've had so far.

Deep Within Mars, Liquid Water Offers Hope for Life

Why is this important? It's the first detection of liquid water on an actual planet, it's close enough that we can follow up in a reasonable timeframe. Previous detections of extraterrestrial water have been in more exotic environments more remote from Earth like Enceladus, a moon of Saturn. And liquid water is important because, as we know very well from our own home planet, liquid water is important for life as we know it.

Nice piece on a study that demonstrates how natural selection works in the real world.

After Hurricanes Irma and Maria, Caribbean Lizards Have a Better Grip - The Atlantic

Short version: When hurricanes Irma and Maria tore through the Caribbean, anoles (small lizards) with larger toe pads and smaller hind limbs were more likely to survive and therefore to breed. That means the next generation will be more likely to have those features and therefore be more likely to survive future hurricanes.

The point being that evolution isn't about "getting better" or developing towards some purpose. Rather, it's about those with the right characteristics for a given environment being the ones who will survive and breed, so that those characteristics become more common in future generations, improving the survival rates of the species as a whole.
