I have just heard that the truck driver was not injured in that accident. Although there are no specifics being shared yet, it does appear that the truck hit the bus, and the truck had the stop sign.

My heart goes out to that truck driver.
People make mistakes, they have moments of distraction or just misses.
If it turns out that he was at fault, i hope that he is cared for, and cared for well.

@Seeler I have been first on a few accidents. My training is as a lifeguard. I get very calm and do what needs to be done until I am relieved. Then I get shaky and scared.

The names are coming out slowly of the deceased, after the families are notified I assume. Young men from all over the prairies. And tough also on the billet families who adopt them for the year or more.

The news is devastating. So tragic. The loss of young lives and their dreams. Praying that the God of Comfort will be with their families.

My paternal grandfather killed a 5 year old child, completely accidentally. He was driving a truck, child nipped out between two parked cars, he was never thought to be at fault. He was said to be a gentle man, and it haunted him for the rest of his life. Accidents can be such awful tragedies for such an extended group of people.

I honestly hope this was the case. But if he was impaired or speeding or otherwise engaged in driving behaviour that caused or contributed to what happened, then that wasn't a simple mistake and I hope the cops and Crown do their job and make sure he feels the consequences.

Oh, I imagine the driver feels the consequences Mendalla, and most likely will do so for the rest of his/her life, even without the Crown & cops.

My point is that if he is charged with something like impaired driving, he is in a whole different league than someone who just missed a stop sign. There is, as of yet, no sign that was the case but who knows? The cops are being pretty tight-lipped so far. So my jury is out. I am not about to get all sad for him until I hear that he was clean, sober, and just missed a sign or something.

If he is clean, I agree that his conscience is enough.

But too many of the behaviours that lead to driving charges, like careless and impaired driving, are not innocent mistakes but conscious, repeated actions. My sympathy tends to not be with people whose conscious, repeated actions bring grief to others.

And that's my last statement on this. Let's focus on those in grief and pain. The legal issues will become in due course.

I have met several people who have killed or injured people because they were driving after drinking. It affected them profoundly as well. I am not excusing their behaviour for the record. We're quick to judge those who drive after drinking. It isn't usually as simple as our judgements would imply.

An accident like this will likely affect everyone close to it (in one way or another) for decades to come.

I really appreciate the kind and supportive words offered here. Thank you all for your kindness.

From what I can gather thus far (rumour of course) - most people seem to be saying that the bus hit the semi. The semi should have been stopped at the clearly marked Stop sign with added flashing light . Both vehicles appear to have been going fast, suggesting that the semi went straight through without stopping. Some are saying that the semi driver could have been blinded by the sun as he was driving west. One of our friends who uses that stretch of road said he has to make an effort to remember that the Stop sign is there when driving into the sun as it is almost impossible to see the sign or the flashing light.

Time will tell what the story is - the RCMP are still dealing with the scene. My son and family are kind of locked in!

Rumour is interesting - someone today told me there was NO WAY the STARS helicopter picked anyone up on the highway - they need a landing pad. I described the exact location where it landed - on the highway at the end of my son's drive. She got huffy and stomped off muttering that I was nuts. Not something worth arguing about!

I can only think of the number of times when I have been driving into the sun, not really sure what I was seeing. There are certain times of day, at certain angles, that are just dangerous.

Some of you may know that middle child was hit by a car while in grade 10. She was riding her bike-with a helmet, home from school. She was riding across a marked cross walk in the crosswalk-with a walk sign. It was a T intersection and the drivers at right angles to her had a red light.
Driver came up and turned right without stopping.
She was trapped under the car and suffered a long burn to her inner leg-like 12 inches long. It required burn grafts-so pain where skin was taken from as well. Scars never went away. She also broke her left humerus-arm bone-and had radial nerve damage. She needed a variety of splints for her hand/arm for a year until she regained full use.

Driver was not impaired, not on cell phone but just drifted through a right turn on a red without stopping. Outcome to my daughter (and ouor family) was the same.
We did sue and his insurance paid out (4 years later).

So my real point is the results for family and friends are the same.

Was the bus speeding? Dis the truck driver not stop at a sign? Lives have been lost and grief is strong.

There is so much pain here right now, and, instead of blame...reasons need to be found, and corrections made. But, as a driver, it does remind me that I am behind the wheel of a very powerful tool that could be a weapon if I am not mindful. I think we become complacent sometimes. My husband points out every driving error he sees on the road...It keeps him talking a lot when we are on a driving trip.
