There's lots of humanely raised critters, but...the price is quite prohibitive of "every day use" because of the way we subsidize farming here. Too many of us do not understand agriculture. I am lucky that I live on the edge of a city near some heavy ag use.

Gotta watch your vegan manners, Jae.

When my daughter tried vegetarianism on for size (she was just a kid then) we had a book that talked about vegetarian manners.

Sorry paradox3, but slaughtering animals so humans can enjoy richer pastries is cruel imho.

Jae, this sort of discussion doesn't belong in the Room. Please start a thread about veganism if you're so inclined.

Making some lovely curried potatoes for tomorrow's potluck at the church; there are some curry leaves from a tree in Malaysia belonging to a friend's sister-in law. Mixed white and sweet. It's quite nice; enjoy as a little evening snack for those in EST...

We tended to bacon fat added to the pan drippings from the roast, lol (more flavour than pure lard, which went into pastry and "chips").
When I was growing up there was always a little container of bacon fat in the kitchen. We used it for frying eggs when we were not having bacon for breakfast. And for various other things. But for roast potatoes it was always lard as I remember.

Sounds wonderful!

Since we are talking about food, I am wondering what @BethAnne does with all of her crocheted food items.

We have seen them on the LAST post and Wonder Art threads, I believe.

Well, I didn't head to my sister's as she had the flu, and we were worried about it still being contagious. Sounds like the right choice was made as my brohter-in-law is now down with it.

I took the day to let some decisions process in the back of my head whilst I relaxed. Was up intermittently through the night due to noisy neighbours. Could have phoned down, but, I do understand families and kids ibeing excited in a room. They were up early...and so was I. Had a nice nap this afternoon.

This is a true story.

When oldest Paradox daughter moved out a few years ago, she left some lard behind in the fridge. (She is the baker of the family.)

Mr Paradox recently pulled it out and tried using it on roast potatoes. So delicious!

And they brought back memories of my mom's roast potatoes. . . he has now purchased another box of the stuff to use in the future.

Talk of crocheted food items reminds me to look up a couple of patterns for knitted "mice" for the critter. A completed project (the fingerless mitts are done; I have started a pair of socks) seems to often result in "bits" of wool; would like to have some ideas for them; like the idea of "sculpture"...

I have had some interesting thoughtful convos with people over the years about various diets. As often disclosed, I am an omnivore. I find taking positions that include the word slaughter best discussed in a dedicated thread, not a social one.

Lard is ridiculously good, even though pigs are quite smart and delightful critters...

Who is to say the eggs are not free-range?

The ones we use are free range and the hens are even picked up and hugged occasionally by the little farm kids.

Just in case anyone wonders - I rarely make pastry, but when I do I use lard. I also save the 'drippings' and occasionally enjoy that type of animal fat n some hot toast. Funny how much we tend to enjoy the things we ate as wee kids.

I use lard for pastry. And I am not apologising.

I told my friend years ago that I burn one piece of bacon so the neighbours think we

have bacon and eggs for breakfast every morning. lol.

Went to the local second hand book sale yesterday and picked up the book “ pigs in heaven”. Just saying....

Let me know what you thought of it Mrs. A. I reread it a while ago ... thought it had a lot of sublime messages ... makes me think of the editor that wrote of the other perspective ... Pigs at the Trough ! May have turned American tycoons off the news and Nous ... Nous being an old word for sol ... the intellectual part as despised by upright Gods?

Some crappy end of the post is needed for sensitivity to empathy ... opposes psychopathy ... serial slaughter beyond the 5 as quinsy? Some fingers and digitation involved ... like ganglia ... neuronal parts? Sometimes blocked to mental processing ... the devils advocate regarding extreme free wiles ... pure politic! It goes round too ...

Not sure how quickly I get to read it, at $3 for any book, hardcover or paperback, including nice photo gardening books, I picked up a stash of books and I started with “ the 100 year old man who climbed out the window and dissappeared” for now.
I am afraid, after having four days off, I will have to go back to work tomorrow...
