The church can't do much if it holds itself apart from other persons and groups that support democracy and human rights. Church membership and relevance is in decline. Out on the west coast there are likely more atheists than church goers. Hardly anybody goes to church. It's a small entity here - all denominations. They're not noticed much. But human rights, equality, peace, and the environment are issues of importance despite decline in church membership. The church has to be for the people rather than the people for the church, in order to do anything significant and be taken seriously. Pope Francis has made some headway in that regard, and I respect him for it - even though he is still stuck in a few old school views.
Funny thing is - I thought the church was supposed to be for God.
