There is not the slightest reason to believe that young people are smarter than old ones. Despots have been dying for thousands of years. We always breed replacements.
If you find no reason to believe it will happen then you prevent it from happening.

nonsense. Cute as that sounds, I have no significant effect on who Americans elect.
Look. Get off the personalities. The United States has been committing mass murder for the last 70 years - and rarely with any clear reason for it. Trump did not do that.
They have been permitting the very wealthy to avoid taxes, effectively preventing most Americans from getting services they need. They have been destroying public education - while boosting the private version. Trump is scarcely the first one that has done that. (It's also done in Canada.)
As a bonus, the wealthy of both Canada and the U.S. have a whole series of loopholes before they even look at their taxes. We have to pay more to cover that. - and we still can't.
Canada and the U.S. are deep in corruption and legalized theft. Both are also losing their capacity to serve the people they are supposed to serve. We're crush under greed, stupidity and callousness. And us watching Sesame St. from dawn to sunset doesn't change that.
We are in very, very deep trouble. It's going to take difficult and even revolutionary measures to survive. But I see no sign of any major party recognizing that either in Canada or the U.S.
I can agree that Trump is a very disturbed man. But dumping him for another of that lot isn't going to do anything.

I have a conscience - 'spirit of truth' - when I ignore that - lie to myself - then I know that I am not governing myself accordingly. So while I may not always be capable of doing the right thing - I can at least admit to doing the wrong thing.
The personalities determine the values which determine which issues people find important, and where they stand. And that can be determined by upbringing. And it's not nonsense. Keep hope alive. No you are not going to change anything by watching Sesame St. But kids are going to change and grow up by the morals and ethics they are taught. That's important. And I am saying - if it's not happening in the churches, the Spirit finds a way anyway.

The personalities in government and business do not define the values. Nor should they.
As for the spirit finding a way, it has not found a way in 2,000 years. So I would not depend on that.

That said, Graeme...I think you should have a Sesame Street watching marathon just for the heck of it.
Personalities do define - sociopaths can very rarely empathize, for example. But upbringing creates that.
Anyway. Cheer up, mate.

Oh, I have watched it. TV is actually a poor device for learning. It depends on picture that constantly change, changing camera angles, shifting colour patterns It has so much trivia to watch that people don't learn much from it. If you want to affect people's thinking, turn to radio every time. There's just the sound , the words, so you concentrate on that and learn from it.

Give me an example of how the spirit has found a way. Perhaps you could start with the crusades, or the burning of Joan of Arc, or the spread of slavery, or the slaughter of native peoples in the Americas..... Do you figure it was the spirit's idea to end World War 2 with two nuclear bombings?

Graeme, you've been a teacher; you know that learning styles vary. Some very smart people are just not auditory learners. I have a sister, very smart, cannot learn that way. The sound of the spoken voice irritates her into shutting down learning. She's good with video, fine kinaesthetically, does well reading information, but cannot take it via audio.

"The Spirit will find a way" is religion-speak for "I'm going to assume something good will happen eventually and then I can say the Spirit did it!"
Is there anything more obviously false about Christianity than people suffering through defeat after defeat, not thinking God had anything to do with the bad times, then cherry picking any positive news as evidence of some "Spirit"? As if good things aren't allowed to happen on their own - they have to be employed immediately in Christian propaganda.
The worst part of this tendency is the snatching of credit from anyone who should receive at least part of it, and giving it to the faith. We need to recognize real people before imaginary friends.
The spirit of cooperation, the spirit of goodwill, the spirit of friendship, the triumph of the human spirit.
The zeitgeist, definition: the defining "spirit" or mood of a particular period of history, as shown by the ideas and beliefs of the time.
The fruits of the Holy Spirit (the Spirit of Christ) are: love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
No imaginary friends are being discussed. No imaginary friends required. We make it happen - we, human beings, make ideas manifest -but we see it in retrospect, that they happened in a particular "spirit" of the time.
You could try to stretch the limits of your imagination. You miss the point.
