You're vegetarian, right, Waterfall? I sympathize with your desire that animals not suffer, but I also think it's something of a denial of the animals we are. We are evolved to be omniverous. As soon as we say "killing any living thing", we've established a line. Insects? Water insects? Trees? Only annual plants really barely escape this category, and even then, did we leave some seeds to make plants for next year?
I think all kinds of cases can be made for eating less meat, for making sure that our meat sources are ethical and sustainable; it's hard for me to see the ethical position that "killing nothing would lead to world peace"...
