TRUMP - Some people think......... How do you feel?

I doubt that Hitler would have cared if "we" had called him on anything. If you're referring to Germans, actually, lots of people called Hitler on it. The Social Democrats and Communists in Germany quite vocally. That's why he was never able to really win a free election in Germany. He took power as the result of a shoddy political deal, not because he ever won a majority in the Reichstag. In other words, he was called on it by many people, but he still took power.

So, when you say Hitler should have been "called on it" - how?
What was the shoddy political deal?

This.

If you truly think they are wrong, you show it. You demonstrate it. You mock it. The moment you simply try to silence them, they win.
And how does doing nothing but mocking actually play out to prevent an authoritarian from taking office? Has it worked somewhere before?

This is what Americans are dealing with. They want to present the illusion that they are not bigots, and that they have wide appeal. Show the hypocrisy. Make fun of the idiots. Make fun of them every time they do something stupid. Highlight the idiocy. Move from example to example. Make them laughingstocks.

Sorry, you're against Latin Americans supporting the candidate of their choice... why exactly?

I don't think those people are Latino... They can't find enough Latinos willing to support Trump, in the crowd. So they borrowed a couple of white cowboys/ cowgirls to hold up signs so the overhead cameras catch them.

It doesn't stop them. Colbert does a stellar job mocking stuff like this. No change. Trump kept rising. Trumps followers want to be Teflon like their leader.

Colbert even said "the Weimar Cabaret (was often political satire - pre WW2) didn't stop Hitler" (actually he made a comment about a sarcastic remark someone else made about the Weimar Cabaret stopping Hitler in his tracks)

We have a broader reach today with modern communications. We have more tools at our disposal. What the American's are fighting is the stupidification of their country, where public education cuts for decades have had obvious effects and education is seen as "elitism". You can fool a lot of people, but the best bet for taking down a ridiculous force like Trump is to show how ridiculous he is. We need a new Jon Stewart. There is no obvious answer there. We may have to crowdsource mockery.

Those people are Latino like my son in my avatar is black.

The words Latino and black are not akin. Latino refers to one's place of origin, whereas black is most commonly used to speak of a person's race. There are white Latinos just as there are, say, black Koreans.

John Oliver's really good. He's smart and bold, too. I'm not a big fan of the guy who took over for Stewart. In fact, his name escapes me. I watched a few clips - probably not a whole show - and they just didn't resonate with me. Jon Stewart retired too early. He should've waited until after Nov 2016 at least.

But...Trump's base doesn't watch them anyway so they preach to the choir. I watched a short BBC documentary about Trump's base last night. The journalist went to Bakersfield California where there are a lot of racial divides between whites, blacks and mexicans. In it's hayday Bakersfield was white, comfortable, modest working class. Now it's more divided/ ghettoized. The white people there truly believe Trump speaks for them. They truly believe illegal Mexicans are taking their jobs for lower wages - lots of unemployment all around in that town, and they're scared and everybody is and it's just bringing out the worst in them. They make no apologies for their racism - even as the one man featured in the film debated politics with his Latino next door neighbour. A Latino woman down the block was almost in tears - she served in the Military - she said she didn't serve so Trump could promote hate and racism and she's shocked at how he's brought so much racism out of the woodwork.

I have a wedding in a few minutes, so I'll get to the shoddy political deal in a little while. But, again - what's your solution? Arresting him? Forbidding him to speak? Killing him?

I think potential presidents and VPs should have to have mental health assessments. I don't know why they don't. People need to for lesser jobs. Trump's personality traits make him unsafe to be president, to have that much power. It's been pointed out in dozens of articles how closely his traits resemble malignant narcissism - he's scary. He sounds like a dictator and he's enjoying it!

A mental fitness test would solve it. "sorry you don't qualify to run for president but we wish you all the best in your continuing real estate and TV careers." Adding..." You are really the best at those!"

I will when it's available, it just aired one hour ago, from Miami.
Maybe I will make it a thread so we can discuss Kaine and Hilary.

Okay, thanks Waterfall. I imagine, based on what I've seen of him on TV that his speeches are much like Pence's - informative, supportive of his running mate, and a little boring.
