I would just assume they wouldn't get someone off any list and handle it from within. Not as much fun to imagine that way, but more likely.
Though really, that's actually a good idea for how to handle Rev. Vosper - do some pulpit swaps. Have some ministers from other UCCan churches preach to West Hill, while she preaches at the corresponding church. There's exactly how this could have been handled. Start with Metropolitan United.
How much common ground would each minister-congregation pairing find? How would discussions go after the sermon? That would have been fascinating.

Yeah, you're right. No need to further understanding between parties. Best just to fire her.
Oh, I'm all for dialogue and understanding. However, I'm not in favor of sending an atheist around to different Christian churches in a Christian denomination to preach to Christian congregations. I believe in strengthening and encouraging faith, not shipwrecking it.

Wait....what if Jae is right? I know, I know, but bear with me. What if the fear is that Gretta, let loose on another UCCan congregation, would gain fans? If there was a pulpit swap, and the respective congregations were exposed to sermons from the other side of the debate, which side is more likely to start budging on their positions - West Hill, or Metropolitan?
Is that a fear? And what if Gretta did convince more people of her positions. Would that be a problem? Is it best to avoid even chancing something like that? Because I'd think she and West Hill would be willing to do something like that. What other church would?

Is faith that easy to wreck? One atheist speaker, and the Holy Spirit disappears like, well, a ghost? Is it really that simple?
Maybe it is. Not a great feather in the cap of faith, but maybe it is. I've always said that I think the best way to sabotage faith is to expose people to lots of different beliefs at an early age. Maybe you can start late and still get there.
And why aren't you wringing your hands at the prospect of converting West Hill people? If what you have is so powerful, why more concern than anticipation?
No, not at this time.
No, but why chip away at someone's saving faith. Also, what if there's someone there that day in the congregation who doesn't have faith. They need to hear the Word of God.
