My two "dream vacations" - two cruises - one "warm" and one to Alaska!

I've done the warm. It was okay but I think cruising isn't really suited to our personalities. Alaska we will likely do, though, someday.

my first choice would be a more active exploring type holiday rather than a cruise-but my mom is limited in her endurance-and likes a mid day nap if possible. A cruise seemed the best bet for both of us. No driving, no navigating-and her bed is there when she needs it. I can hit the pools, the fitness room, and walk lots at the ports. It should suit both of us.

friends have commented too Tabitha on cruising being a good intergenerational family choice - grandma can snooze, the older grandkids can dance the night away, the littles can play in kid's clubs, folks our age can have lots of choice ... all under one "roof" with health care readily available too.

I can see that and maybe when we're older, cruising will appeal to us more. For now, we'd rather do "destinations" like Paris (our summer trip last year). This year, we're looking at Switzerland and Northern Italy since my wife has a conference in Lugano which is in the Italian part of Switzerland.

Wonderful Mendalla! My preference too, for now. We travelled in Northern Italy in 2006 - if you want any suggestions, let me know :-)

I wouldn't do it, at least not in the short term. I don't feel like the health care is sufficient for more serious issues.

Only current plan is to hit Milan, both for Milan and for Expo 2015. Beyond that, it's still far enough away that we haven't thought about it much.

Milan cathedral is, of course, an extraordinary place - do make sure you venture up to the roof top (we opted for the elevator ride!) where you can walk all around outside - lots of young couples sneaking a smootch  The 'fashion streets' are an interesting browse into the world of the extraordinarily wealthy - astonishing prices on things - I don't know who has the money. It's a beautiful day trip by train from Milan to Lake Como - then a short boat ride over to George Clooney's place. Milan itself we found to be just a big city. It's not a long train journey from Milan down to Cinque Terre ... gorgeous area to spend a few days of hiking & exploring.
