It is both. Many didn’t see how they were being manipulated. Many didn’t want to believe those who were trying to tell them they were being manipulated.
It started way back. How far back? The latest American iteration started with Steve Bannon, Roger Stone, social media influencers, and gamer nerds in the “marketplace of ideas” propaganda machine. Yes, it’s true. Those not interested in what’s happening online wouldn’t have seen it. They wrote it off as nonsense but it was dangerously effective nonsense.
It is both. Many didn’t see how they were being manipulated. Many didn’t want to believe those who were trying to tell them they were being manipulated.

Maybe it was advice the elusive madman and his minions got from The Screwtape Letters and took literally. Maybe they didn’t even know that Wormwood Inc was working on them. Maybe nobody did. It was just in the cultural zeitgeist subconsciously.
Though, I question some of the descriptions of the human condition that reflect the authors’ own prejudices - not entirely fair. He was an imperfect person, in an imperfect time, too. He was gifted with a lot of insight though.
