What's at the bottom of the ocean?

Ninety-five per cent of the ocean is unexplored. What's down there? In 1960, Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard travelled seven miles down, to the deepest part of the ocean, in search of answers. Their voyage pushed the boundaries of human endeavour but gave them only a glimpse of life on the seafloor. It's so difficult getting to the bottom of the ocean that for the most part we have to resort to sending unmanned vehicles as scouts. The discoveries we've made so far – from bizarre fish such as the barreleye, with its transparent head, to a potential treatment for Alzheimer's made by crustaceans – are a tiny fraction of the strange world hidden below the waves.

So, what do think we might unearth next? Is this worth investigating further?

One thing there isn't: Megladon. From what we have found so far, it lived in relatively shallow zones feeding on cetaceans (whales). So there's no basis to the idea promoted in The Meg and various dubious TV "documentaries" (note the quotes) that it could have survived undetected by living in the remote depths. That simply isn't consistent with how Megladons actually lived.

More serious, there's these. Geothermal vents, sometimes call "smokers", are the basis for whole ecosystems deep below the sea. The geothermal vents are the source of energy since the sun is largely non-existent this far down. Fascinating places and some speculate that these might actually where life originated billions of years ago. And that the oceans discovered on some of the gas giant moons could have similar ecosystems.
