That God spared Abraham's son but did not spare his own reveals something about the quality of his love. Jesus is voluntarily the lamb who was slaughtered to set us free.
Unless Jesus died not to save us from sin but BECAUSE of our sin.

Much that same as you have chosen to misinterpret my own personal intentions rather than actually listen to me. You insist you know what I'm doing and why. According to you I'm twisting all the bad stuff, according to me I'm searching for the story to reveal the truth.
The story is already there. You've noticed the story is lacking as an example of good parenting skills. But you have come to the conclusion that God is love, and would not suggest a parent kill their child. Not even for a laugh. So you keep looking for a good explanation why God would suggest such a thing. This way, you're "searching", while I'm "WTF?"ing.

I suggest that if we changed the names and presented you with the same story in a mythical context outside the Bible, your response to the story would also be "WTF?" It would be for most people. It's not that you need to find a happy explanation for every case of attempted murder - you just need to find a happy explanation for the one in the Bible.

But all of that is still here. Still have evil powers around.

The powers are still at work, but Jesus has won the victory over them. We can be free of their enslavement through him, and God's Kingdom will soon come in its fullness - the powers will be no more.

By "demands more sense be made out of it," what you really mean is, "twist it until all the bad stuff is gone."

You lose credibility every time you do this. You can not just take every story that offends an evolved morality, and hack away at it until it fits. People notice.

Sorry, I haven't read many posts above, but and they are coming in in a flourish as I write.

Abraham was living among people who had human sacrifices. He was living in a time when women were property, and children even more so.

Sacrificing your son then would be no more barbaric than, say, having an abortion today.

So God, told Abraham not to kill his son, and took them away from those other religious practices. They were to be set apart from all the evil people as God's chosen.

Abraham and God both knew Isaac was not to be sacrificed.....and he wasn't.

Oh brother.....so God just wanted to tell some people not to kill their kids?

So if Abraham was in on the ruse, the whole point of it was to scare the crap out of Isaac? Where does the moral part come in?
Isaac was more than likely a grown man in his early thirties.....around the same age as Jesus when he was crucified.
I would think both knew what was happening.
