There is a strong tradition in that country of admiring people who go "off script" or "stick to the man" and he manages to give the illusion of doing that while actually being "the man". I mean, seriously, he's a rich white guy in the White House. He's no counter-cultural icon. He's just knows the game and is playing it well and a certain segment, not all of them right-wing whackos, are eating it up. This is reality TV at its finest.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu is the first Israeli PM to face criminal charges. The Israel, the state is an example of oppressed becomes the oppressor. Is it the place of the US to determine the status of Jerusalem?
As for Trump, my favourite headline this morning stated that he has reached the "mad emperor" phase of his presidency with his stunt in front of the church last night.

This happened 2 and a half years ago. I don't recall any comparisons to Cyrus at the time of since.

No way comparable to Cyrus. What happened with Cyrus is that he was the king of the Persians and they conquered Babylon, the state that had taken the Jews into exile. So, as the conqueror of their conqueror, he had the right release them and chose to exercise it. The modern Jews are not captive exiles in Babylon, nor did Trump conquer their oppressor. And they weren't technically "free" even after returning home. Judaea did become part of the Persian Empire, it's just that the Persians treated the Jews better than the Babylonians did.
What partly caused Rome to fall after almost 3,000 years , Trump does after a few hundred years. Using religion doesn't seem to work so well.

Rome didn't fall because of mad emperors. The Empire actually survived Caligula, Nero, and Commodus quite handily. It's much more complicated, but mad emperors were a tiny, tiny part of it at best if at all. Constantine, for instance, was a very strong, sane, capable ruler and he came fairly late.
Didn't say that, Christianity contributed to the fall of Rome.....among many other reasons.

Another iffy hypothesis given that the part of the Empire that lasted into the Middle Ages was also Christian (Byzantium/Constantinople). However, in America's case, fundamentalist Christian influence may be part of the disease, so I'll give you that. Trump is a symptom, though. He didn't emerge in a vacuum. Polarization of society and especially politics is the disease and the causes of that go pretty deep and far back. The fundamentalists are certainly a part of it, but there's secular problems, too.

Rome is certainly edifying to think upon right now. There are countless precipitating factors contributing to the fortunes of empires, and usually empires erode before they fall. I can only add that Rome underestimated the power of the "uncivilized". They were Vandalized.

Only "uncivilized" to Southern European eyes. The Germanic tribes were far more civilized and sophisticated than the Greeks and Romans (and we) give them credit for. Unfortunately, they did not leave written records and the classical civilizations did so our view of them is biased by our sources.

certanly to watch the news the impression is that the USA is in flames. I remember a friend saying the same thing about The uprising in Belfast in the 70/80’s. Took place in a very small area of the city but it appeared that the entire city was in battle on tv
