Colbert is a witty and intelligent satirist, whereas Trump is not (Trump satirizes himself unintentionally and gives comedians material). What Colbert meant is "this stuff writes itself". But there is a subset of the general population (I'm not talking about the effects of policy) that misses the humour of Trump and the reason for humour, altogether. Sorry about that. It's really unfortunate.

“It’s been an honor to be on stage and talk about that day’s Trump” rannygazoo."
Colbert told the crowd of media buyers, network execs and reporters
.

A billionaire corporate celebrity side kick for a millionaire corporate 'witty' talk show host is what sells.
The majority of the general population are buying it hook line and sinker but who is laughing all the way to the bank?

I heard an interview yesterday with David Frum - well known conservative and opponent of Donald Trump. Some interesting things he noted:

1) 20 years ago when various groups of people were asked how important it was for a president to show high standards of moral behaviour, evangelical Christians cared the most about this issue. Today, surveys show that evangelical Christians are among those who care the least about this issue. That is very troubling.

2) As people get younger surveys show that they are progressively more attracted to so-called "strong man leadership" and that they care less and less whether they live in a democracy. That is also very troubling.

3) Trump and his supporters define accurate reporting about him as "fake news" and the rule of law as "the deep state," meaning more and more people are led to simply ignore and dismiss the very things (media and law) that should be holding him accountable for his actions.

Frum dismissed those who compare Trump to someone like Hitler. As he said, moving immediately to the single most extreme example of the failure of democracy makes those who opose Trump seem ridiculous. Instead, he compared him to gum disease - something we may not even realize we have but that releases toxins into our system that can eventually kill us.
It was a very interesting interview.

Frum is generally bit too conservative for my taste politically, but he's a thoughtful, intelligent conservative and his writing about Trump shows it pretty clearly.

Frum is not thoughtful or intelligent. He's a quite extraordinarily arrogant person who holds those who are not rich in utter contempt. He and his sister got it from their mother. I shall never forget the supper I had to host for his mother who was the ultimate believer in her own perfection and who had outspoken contempt for anyone who wasn't rich. His sister is, I believe a Canadian senator who has the family's values in spades, and has no possibly qualifications to be a senator (though few senators do have such qualifications.) When she divorced, she wrote an article about how difficult it was to live on one's own because it makes it so difficult to deal with the interior decorator.

The whole family believes that the rich and only the rich should run the world, and the rest of us are of no account whatever.

I’m surprised nobody is talking here about the latest on the Russia thing. That we are so close now to inditements, firings and probably jail.

Actually I’m not. Your news channels are not reporting on it.

On my way into work I generally listen to the end of National Post Radio and then the start of the Arlene Bynon Show. They were both speaking about it.
