Kimmio, it's original purpose aside, the electoral college is now a rubber stamp. Its purpose is now to have the state by state vote reflected in the election for president. That's why Trump has a 306-232 margin coming out of the election. He won more states and more electoral votes than Clinton. He's going to be president. I am 100% absolutely sure that unless he dies before January 20, he will become president on January 20. If the electoral college were to choose anyone else there would be riots in the streets (and justified ones in my opinion) because that really would be a coup of sorts that overturns the practice of how electors are chosen and how elections are decided that has existed since the early 19th century. Trump won the election according to the rules that everybody agreed to and that have been followed for about 200 years whether his opponents like it or not. He will be the President of the United States.
You be 100% certain, then. Like I said, we've entered bizarro world, it's the Twilight Zone - and I am not 100% certain of anything political at the moment.

None of this could matter less.
The latest word from Aleppo, which you won't see in your local news meda, is that the defeat of the Jihadists in that city included to surrender of some 100 special forces units from our side - U.S., Britain, France, Germany, Saudi....
There are probably more.
They had been advisors on the side of the Jihadists.
In other words, Muslim terrorism is largely financed, trained and equipped by us - and this while the Trumps and the Obamas of this world assure us that terrorists are evil, and a threat we must defeat.
None of the Tump/Clinton stuff matters. The us is ruled by an aristocracy of birth - the sons of the very very wealthy. The politicians are decorative.

You can follow this story going all the way back to the Russian invasion of Afghanistan. The US CREATED the Islamist threat.
Where do you think a bunch of the discontented are getting the weapons and supplies and money to fight such wars?
The biggest enemy Americans face (and us) is their ruling aristocracy of big money.

It matters if the baton is being passed to Trump next month. I don't know that he'll make it any better.

And Graeme, nations, whoever they are, financing bad guys to cause destruction, doesn't make them not bad guys. If that happened. I think what happened is the U.S. wanted Assad out. He was killing his own citizens who opposed him. They didn't want to put U.S. troops into another war - so they trained militia there - who went rogue. It really really sucks but I do not think Obama can be counted in the 'aristocracy'. He had humble beginnings. He had a humble and diverse background. He was derided for having been a "community organizer" - so socialist, said everyone. He was blasted for his "outstretched hand" comments. I do not believe he wanted carnage in Syria. Obama may have been used. He was certainly maligned with racism to get Trump's future groupies to turn on him. The 'birther' movement.

The purpose of the electoral college is supposedly to prevent somebody unfit from getting into office - it's supposed to be a safeguard. But we are living in bizarro world now, so...who knows. Don't be so sure. I'm pretty sure he'll get inaugurated on January 20th, but not 100% sure.

Trump himself, at his last rally - called the electoral college "genius". Was there a hidden message in that? Or was he just complimenting them? Also, he said that even those who didn't vote for him should never give up. They won't.

The unfit one lost the election. Last I heard of her, she had gone for a long walk with her husband in the snow.

Proving once and for all that the US government does not learn from history. That's exactly what happened in Afghanistan. They trained and armed the mujahideen against the Soviets and the Soviet-backed government. When the Soviets pulled out, a faction of the mujahideen became the Taliban and allied themselves with Osama bin Laden and his Al Qaeda organization. They seized power and the US decided it wanted them out of power, leading to the mess that we got sucked into after 9/11. In Iraq, they plunged in and overthrew a stable, if tyrannical, regime and replaced it with chaos that created a safe space for Islamic State to get started, who then were able to take advantage of the chaos in Syria, which was partly caused by seemingly ill thought-out meddling in the civil war by the US. Syria is either the sequel to or the remake of Afghanistan/Iraq, take your pick. The best thing for the world right now might well be the US going hardcore isolationist because they've done nothing but f*** up country after country ever since 'Nam and they either have a deliberate agenda for doing so or they are dumb as posts because they clearly are not learning from history. And Obama has most certainly been part and parcel of the mess by his role in Syria and, alas, we're getting sucked in again, too.

The U.S. - as Mendalla shows - did not 'stay out' of the Syrian war. Not at all. It set up that war. It supplied the rebels who were, largely, modelled on the terrorist organization that the U.S. had built up in Afghanistan.
Wealthy business people have become an aristocracy. Like aristocracy, they are commonly born into positions of power. In the twentieth century, they have usually exerted that power on the politicians, and they have come to be the real power in the U.S. Trump just brings it into the open.
They are not great thinkers. They don't rule for the people. They simply come from families which have aristocratic status as a right of birth. And, under Trump, they have brought into real power the most bizarre collection of far right loonies ever seen in any country.
Let's not waste time time about the U.S. as a democracy. That simply does not exist any more. It is an aristocracy of the wealthy who rule either through puppets (Clinton, Obama) or themselves (Trump). The democracy is gone and it's not coming back - unless -as as quite possible- some states secede and become independent.
The society as a whole is controlled as a police state. There is no individual freedom.
And there is no point is discussing all this in the context of Clinton and Trump. That world is long gone. The new reality is all power to the very wealthy - who are as brutal, uncaring and murderous as one could hope to find anywhere in the world.
A world that we knew and (sort of) understood is gone. Now watch for one hell of brutal attack on the poor, and those who need social service structures. Watch for an attack on the environment - and none is this really new because Clinton was moving in the same direction. This is the end result of a feature of the U.S. revolution that was always there, right from the start.
And jae, if you can see this as consistent with Christian values, you would have pronounced Stalin a saint.

Trump is Hilary is Obama is Bush. The tweets are his own, and seem designed to provoke reaction while usually saying nothing.
Forget Trump. The real problem is that millions worship him. You might wonder what has happened to the American mind.

That I can not buy, Graeme. I can see your ppint that they are all bad, but I think they each bring their own loyalties with them
They are also stuck in a rut of being Amurrican, bombing stuff and generally acting like a global police force. To not do that is seen as weak.

It's not actually they who are doing all t hose things. George Bush invaded Iraq. But did he really? What did he have to gain from such a war?
I can more easily see Trump working out of such a system - and going to war for his own reasons. And that war, I suspect, would be against China..
It's possible that Trump sees more than power and glory for himself.

The decisions are not made by the George Bushes or Obamas or Clintons or Trumps. They are made by the people who own the U.S. The major capitalists are the real government of the U.S.

Trump does, of course, see power and glory for himself. Commonly he expresses it through twitters and slogans that don't really mean a whole lot. But sometimes it goes beyond that to, perhaps, the destruction of China.
