Is this an autobiographical detail that is believed to be historical? Or is it more like the gospel writer signing his work?
That becomes a bit of an interpretation question. My memory is that the NT prof who shared that tidbit in class was doubtful it is was historical.

It is an odd little story which reminds me of the one in Matthew about the fish with the coin in its mouth. Both stories are short, kind of strange & appear nowhere else.

See how little Christ values outward pomp, where there is not real purity of heart. He looks with pity upon the ruin of precious souls, and weeps over them, but we do not find him look with pity upon the ruin of a fine house. Let us then be reminded how needful it is for us to have a more lasting abode in heaven, and to be prepared for it by the influences of the Holy Spirit, sought in the earnest use of all the means of grace.

Our Lord Jesus, in reply to the disciples' question, does not so much satisfy their curiosity as direct their consciences. When many are deceived, we should thereby be awakened to look to ourselves. And the disciples of Christ, if it be not their own fault, may enjoy holy security and peace of mind, when all around is in disorder. But they must take heed that they are not drawn away from Christ and their duty to him, by the sufferings they will meet with for his sake. They shall be hated of all men: trouble enough! Yet the work they were called to should be carried on and prosper. Though they may be crushed and borne down, the gospel cannot be. The salvation promised is more than deliverance from evil, it is everlasting blessedness.

The Jews in rebelling against the Romans, and in persecuting the Christians, hastened their own ruin apace. Here we have a prediction of that ruin which came upon them within less than forty years after this. Such destruction and desolation, that the like cannot be found in any history. Promises of power to persevere, and cautions against falling away, well agree with each other. But the more we consider these things, the more we shall see abundant cause to flee without delay for refuge to Christ, and to renounce every earthly object, for the salvation of our souls.

The disciples had confounded the destruction of Jerusalem and the end of the world. This mistake Christ set right, and showed that the day of Christ's coming, and the day of judgment, shall be after that tribulation. Here he foretells the final dissolution of the present frame and fabric of the world. Also, the visible appearance of the Lord Jesus coming in the clouds, and the gathering together of all the elect to him.

We have the application of this prophetic sermon. As to the destruction of Jerusalem, expect it to come very shortly. As to the end of the world, do not inquire when it will come, for of that day and that hour knoweth no man. Christ, as God, could not be ignorant of anything; but the Divine wisdom which dwelt in our Saviour, communicated itself to his human soul according to the Divine pleasure. As to both, our duty is to watch and pray. Our Lord Jesus, when he ascended on high, left something for all his servants to do. We ought to be always upon our watch, in expectation of his return. This applies to Christ's coming to us at our death, as well as to the general judgment. We know not whether our Master will come in the days of youth, or middle age, or old age; but, as soon as we are born, we begin to die, and therefore we must expect death. Our great care must be, that, whenever our Lord comes, he may not find us secure, indulging in ease and sloth, mindless of our work and duty. He says to all, Watch, that you may be found in peace, without spot, and blameless

The young man had been awakened by the Jerusalem party's noise, and, throwing a cloth on, he went out to see what the trouble was about.

Some members of the party tried to catch him. He slipped the cloth from his body, leaving it in their hands, while he escaped.

This young man was Mark himself, who tells this incident which impressed him on his desire to follow Christ.
 
The young man in the garden was wearing linen and Jesus was wrapped with linen in the tomb. It is said that the Dead Sea Scrolls were written on linen.
I have heard the Essenes only wore linen....anyone else hear that?
Could it point to Jesus being an Essene?
 
Summary: Mark 14: 1 - 25

1. Two days before Passover the chief priests and scribes are looking for a way to arrest Jesus and kill him. But they are worried about the people rioting during the festival.

2. While Jesus is at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, a woman comes with a jar of very costly ointment of nard. She breaks open the jar and pours the ointment on His head. Some are angry about this extravagant gesture, saying the jar could have been sold and the money given to the poor. Jesus disagrees, saying she has annointed His body for burial and done what she could. The woman is to be remembered when the good news is later proclaimed.

3. Judas approaches the chief priests in order to betray Jesus. They are pleased and promise to give him money.

4. The disciples prepare the Passover meal after following the a man carrying a jug of water, as instructed by Jesus. In a large upper room of a house, Jesus and the twelve eat the meal. Jesus predicts that one of them will betray Him. It would have been better for this one not to be born.

5. The Lord's Supper is instituted. Here are the familiar words:

So one side wrote it because they had an axe to grind. Then they effectively won. By now, I would say that axe is extremely worn and bloody. But the scripture is still there, still trying to hone an edge on the same f***ing axe.
Hi,
Are we to blame the axe or the hands that make use of it? I know an axe can be used to chop wood for a warming fire. It can also be used to damage the house of a neighbour.
I reserve a lot of blame for the influence provided by the bible to keep sharpening the axe and where to swing it.

This is such a poignant story. . . Jesus celebrating the Passover with His disciples, knowing he is about to be betrayed and arrested.

Who was the man with the jug of water, I wonder? Two of the disciples were sent to find this man and follow him into his house. Then they were to ask the owner of the house to show them the guest room. Jesus predicted the owner would show them a large upper room, furnished and ready. The disciples went to the city and found everything as Jesus told them. They prepared the Passover meal.

I wonder which two disciples were trusted with this task. Did the owner of the house expect them? Why was everything already prepared in the Upper Room?

As the meal was eaten, Jesus took the loaf of bread and blessed it. "Take, this is my body," He said. "This is my blood of the (new) covenant, poured out for many."

The institution of the Lord's Supper is also described in Matthew, Luke and 1 Corinthians.

John's gospel has the foot-washing story in its place.

There's even a story about who sold this fabrication .. as a seamless robe ... one must allow for breaks ... trapdoors, etc.

Mark 14 tells of the Cross -----

unsafe says ------This passage shows the clear Picture of God using His Sovereignty to bring about His Plan ----every detail provided here is orchestrated by God The Father to bring what He Planned before the foundation of the earth ------

No one will stop God's Plan -----All His Plan is not yet fulfilled but it will be fulfilled ---As Jesus said in Mark 13 ----No one knows the day or hour -----

We see in the first part that a women anoints Jesus with expensive oil and some get upset thinking that it could be sold to help the poor and Jesus says in verse 6 ---------6 Jesus said, “Leave her alone! Why are you bothering her? She has done a beautiful thing for me. 7 You will always have the poor with you and can help them whenever you want. But you will not always have me with you.

Preparations for the Passover --------unsafe says ---Jesus sends 2 Disciples to the city to meet a man carrying a Jug of water ---this to me says that Jesus was giving them more proof of God being all knowing and all present in bringing His Will to play out ----- and by Jesus knowing about the Man with the water they will listen and take Heed to what He says at the Passover meal when He tells them that one of the 12 will betray Him -----

The Lord's Supper

And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take…

I. THE WORDS OF THE SAVIOUR AS THEY REGARD THE ACT IN WHICH HIMSELF AND HIS FOLLOWERS WERE THEN ENGAGED.
They were drinking of "the fruit," or, more properly, "the product" of the vine. Not a mere ordinary social communion, but in direct connection with the Passover. Christ did not design to honour a Jewish rite as commemorating a national deliverance, but as typical, holding a relationship to Him and the economy of which He was the head.

1. That the Lord Jesus led His followers to regard the Passover as being representative of His mediatorial sufferings and death.

2. The Saviour led His followers to consider the Passover as originating an ordinance to be perpetuated for important purposes throughout all the ages of the Christian Church.

II. The words of the Saviour as they regard THE EVENTS HE TAUGHT HIS FOLLOWERS TO ANTICIPATE,

1. An event of approaching" separation — "I will not henceforth drink of the fruit of the vine until" a certain period afterwards-named; He and His disciples were bound to part.

2. An event of ultimate re-union — "When I drink it new with you in My Father's kingdom."

3. All the followers of the Saviour shall be brought to " the Father's kingdom."

4. The mediation of Jesus Christ, of which the Paschal rite is to be regarded as a:permanent and symbolical pledge, is of such a nature as to secure that all those who have possessed a personal interest in that mediatorial work shall be brought into a state of glorious redemption in the bright worlds which lie beyond the grave.

5. The followers of the Saviour shall possess unspeakable and everlasting joy. The drinking of wine indicates the fruition of all delight.

6. The pleasures which are to be enjoyed by the followers of the Saviour in the Father's kingdom are especially to be regarded as associated with His presence. How pre-eminently in the New Testament is the presence of Christ set forth as constituting the happiness of the celestial world (John 12:26).

(1) How vast and wonderful is the love of Christ to man.

(2) The vast importance of being numbered amongst the followers of Christ ourselves.

Jesus and the missionaries reclined about the table, when Jesus took bread. Having blessed it, he broke it and passed it around to them, by going from one to the other, each one receiving a piece.

The substance was the same, "Take and eat; this is my body." This wasn't a symbolical act, for there wasn't the resemblance between the bread pieces and Jesus' body.

Then he gave to them the blessing's cup. And he stated regarding that cup's contents, "This is my blood, which is poured out for many."

It's the NT which Jesus was herewith ushering in; the covenant which God makes with the world in and with Jesus and his blood and through its shedding has brought salvation to people.

About 10% of humanity will be redeemed through Jesus' blood. Those who believe Jesus' words, obeying the Scriptures, will receive this Sacrament's benefit, have their shame removed and be strengthened in their faith.

The Lord's Supper strengthens missionaries during their pilgrimage. And it points forward to the journey's end, to the banquet, where Jesus will drink with them of salvation's cup in eternity.

I don't think I have ever encountered this passage before. It will make for some interesting discussion when we get to John's gospel.

It's an estimate based on the number of Christians there are. I believe only Christians are saved.

To me it suggests that no matter what we're going through, we should thank God for God's provision.
