Mark 5: 48 (NRSV) "He intended to pass them by."

Hmm... I think you mean 6:48.

WYC has... "and he saw them travailing in rowing; for the wind was contrary to them. And about the fourth waking of the night, he wandering on the sea, came to them, and would pass them."

Really? Do you call people who attend the church you go to missionaries? What do you call the people who go over seas on missions?

Different missionaries are called to different places. A few are called on mission to other lands. I myself was called to leave Toronto and go to South Korea. For many missionaries, however, their mission field is their own home neighborhood.

Oops! Good catch.

NKJ has " And about the fourth watch of the night, He came to them, walking on the sea, and would have passed them by.

It seems that Jesus stopped when they cried out.

Perhaps another test of faith - seeing if they would indeed cry out.

Tough taskmaster in that case.

I recall a discussion at a study group about the management style of Jesus. What kind of boss do you think He would be?

Jesus responding to their cries might be a very significant part of this story.

Maybe they found out that Jesus was a fraud. Maybe his so call miracles were not miracles at all. This would explain their unbelief. No wonder he moved on from there.
Nothing in the gospel suggests to me that Jesus was fraudulent. It seems like a story of over familiarity. Or perhaps complacency. I still find it curious that the people of Nazareth did an about-face after initially being impressed with His wisdom and power.

Interesting to ponder that Jesus, too, changed His mind that morning on the sea.

Interesting that Jesus walks on the sea while before him Moses parts the sea. Maybe Jesus was only interested in getting his feet wet at the time.

Well Jesus could very well believe he had the power to heal and those who may have witnessed the healing might have had the same delusions about his healing power. Then some who believed in his healing at first later found out it was no more than a trick. Thus the about-face.

If we are seeking all possible explanations of the story, this one deserves a place on the list. Does it seem the most likely explanation, in your view?

Maybe his power came from knowledge? Egyptian knowledge or eastern knowledge. If one reads the Eber's papyrus from the Egyptians, they knew more than we may think about some medical issues. And also priests and doctors were often the same.

If I view Jesus as human and not divine then yes it would seem the most plausible. Just like the walking on water. It defies the laws of gravity. He could of flew instead it would have been faster. So without the miracles and the magic then what? We have a teacher who thought he was god who said some interesting things and supposedly had quite a few people believing he was god also.

Maybe. I thought Jesus said his power comes from God though.

Thoughts on Mark 6:1-4...

Jesus left Capernaum. The city which he'd chosen as his time during his Galilean ministry had had opportunity of hearing him and of knowing him as the Savior. The people took no interest in eternal life. And so he left them, returning only after his work in the north.

He went to his hometown, Nazareth. The 12 followed Him. Their training was continuing for the time was short.

When it was Sabbath, Jesus went to the synagogue. Here the courtesy shown to a guest teacher was extended to him: he began to teach.

He wanted his hometown's people to hear the gospel; for since the beginning of his ministry he hadn't been in this neighborhood. The talk, as he gave it that morning, surprised his hearers.

The comments were many: From where did this come to this man, this ability to speak, his address' content, the power to do such wonders of which we've been told?

This eagerness for information was replaced by jealousy. Nazareth's people thought they knew his family. He's Mary's son to them. His half-siblings were known to the townspeople. They thought that these facts precluded his knowing anything worthwhile, not realizing that they were thereby passing judgment upon themselves.

Still today people take offense at the gospel. Its simplicity sets them against it and shuts them out of heaven.

Jesus reminded them of a fitting saying: A prophet has honor except in his hometown and among his kin. This is a truth which gets played out - his kin and former fellow-citizens seek to discredit him.

Imagine the brilliance of intelligence locked in a book ... only admired by those outside that could see alternate tomes!

The last verse of John's Gospel has some significance about what was hidden in a dark and arid place ... one story scrolls on ... extending because it lives ... contrary to those preferring slavery!

The exoteric domain inserts fear into their control ... devilish gods manifesting as existent in the essence ... wholly voids?

What is seen through that discontinuity is space is almost magic to those that don;t believe that soul is negative to the all powerful emotional beans ... often declaring jumped up so they will not be accused of dancing ...

This can stoop piffei some folks ... the wry sense of God ...

paradox3 -----your quote ----- Why did Jesus intend to pass by the disciples when he walked across the sea on the water? They had been out all night and were in trouble with the strong wind. He tells them not to be afraid and gets into the boat & the wind drops.

unsafe says ------Jesus intent was not to ignore the Disciples ----it means that He was going passed to reveal Himself to the Disciples that it was He and not a ghost -----

This is the Greek word for pass by ---

Jesus here was on the land at night and could see the Disciples were in trouble ---- He walked towards them knowing that they wouldn't be expecting Him to be walking on the water and would be frightened so He would walk pass the boat so they could see it was Him ------but they saw Him and were frightened -----

unsafe Posting ------- This is from the NLT ---

47 Late that night, the disciples were in their boat in the middle of the lake, and Jesus was alone on land. 48 He saw that they were in serious trouble, rowing hard and struggling against the wind and waves. About three o’clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. He intended to go past them, 49 but when they saw him walking on the water, they cried out in terror, thinking he was a ghost. 50 They were all terrified when they saw him.

But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don’t be afraid,” he said. “Take courage! I am here!

Fr Thomas Berry was convinced that The Great Work was to move into right relations with all of Creation.

Lord Rutherford stated that light appeared to be all over the place in variable hues ... thus it must go on and on and leave us to work with the small illumination rationed out ... some gathering of the common small specks could cause a bump in the dark! Ephemeral or in High Fight ... escapement?

Darkness is a grand icon of mystery ... so off they go into a spiralling twists ... entering breaks in the right place like "Heh" did ... that's ETa in another tradition despised by romantic attitudes against Greek value in philosophy ... in regard to platonic layouts ... schemes and slippy conspiracies initiated by the haggadah?

Quite bazaar in virtue ... mystery is a pain to people that believe as mortal that they are eternally illuminated ...

Jesus moonlighted too? ... teaching slyly because the powers didn't wish the common folks to be literate ... powers may therefore be corrupt ... especially in the enslavement of understanding ... it creeps and leaks ... giving it a fluid metaphor!

Could account for Black Mambas in the Caduceus indicator ... countering the toxin of excess emotions ... could raise strong words of opposition ... popping up when folks know the legion of legends on wisdom! Myticosis?
