Snow Tires

All the larger diameter rim does is make handling sharper, at the expense of ride quality, typically. Advances in suspension design help offset that.

Tires for larger diameter rims cost more. The actual diameter of the entire tire matters less in the actual cost than the diameter of the rim, it seems. Don't understand that part.

The other thing is that people like big wheels. It's the bling. They like them until they have to buy replacement rubber, anyway.

My wife says I look at things differently.

So this is what I noticed in the picture.

1) most of the cars are all pointed in the same direction. Even the one that is upside down. Noticeable exception is the Jeep next to the wreck. That makes me wonder if folk are in the ditch because they couldn't help it or because they were trying to avoid hitting something else. It may not be a tire problem so much as it might be a driver problem.

2) the do not enter sign on the exit ramp. Such signs are more helpful at the point before you get onto the ramp not as you are ready to get off of it. Theoretically you would be facing a lot of oncoming traffic in a very confined space so an earlier warning would actually be more helpful. As it is the sign only affirms that the reason why you are about to die in a head on collision is because you are dumb.

3) more cars in the ditch back a way. Also looks like several wrecks. Did the drivers in the foreground get the memo that there was going to be an accident too late to pile up with everyone else or did they go off road in solidarity?

4) buddy on his cell phone in the fore ground. Is that a new call or was it in progress before he found himself standing there next to a vehicle needing help to get back on the road.

5) all things considered the road looks fairly clear. Maybe the prevailing problem was not the tires employed so much as the visibility available?

The Jeep is facing the wrong way, but having driven a Jeep like that for years, short wheelbase Jeeps always want to face the wrong way. It's their go-to move.

I saw a similar type of scene once. The reason there were so many vehicles in the ditch was because they all chose to head that way. A semi lost its brakes and was approaching at great speed and out of control! Not sure what happened in the photo though.

wreckers are a good place for steel wheels (or used tire dealers).
Most dealers will put on your snows as part of an oil change, considering it a tire roation.

I also get that the outlay for snows can be expensive, but check out the used tire market.
I sold some excellent snows on kijiji for a song and was happy that someone was going to be safer (bought new car, old car went o dealer, figured someone could use the snows)

All seasons loosing grip at 6 degree celsius- thats why you want the snow tires on before the snow comes. We had 12 cm this week, hardly anybody had their snow tires on, but us- junior becoming an auto mechanic had taken care of that in time.
Quebec, as far as I know, has made snow tires mandatory(?). crazy as they are driving there, I am not sure if snow tires are helping.
