Mark 4:30-32

Jesus compares the kingdom of God to a mustard seed. A tiny seed grows into a plant so large birds can nest in its branches.

The previous parable about seeds emphasized the mystery and inevitability of growth. Todays reading seems to focus on the magnitude of that growth.

Would the people of the day have harvested the seeds of the mustard plant? Does anyone know?

Here's a little bit of trivia about harvesting mustard seeds.

The timing is critical. The pods are ready to harvest when they turn brown and open slightly. If the farmer waits until the pods open fully, a big mess will result and the harvest will be inefficient.

This may have nothing to do with the parable but I find it interesting.

I ask Google if it was illegal for the Jews to plant mustard seeds in their farming fields due to its widespread growth ----

This is what AI says

AI

No, it was not illegal to plant mustard seeds in Jewish farming fields. While Jewish law, specifically the Mishnah, did address the planting of mustard seeds, it was not a complete prohibition. According to some Jewish texts, mustard seeds were permitted in fields, but with specific guidelines to prevent them from mingling with other crops in smaller gardens. The concern was primarily about maintaining distinct boundaries between different types of plants to avoid any perceived mixing or "uncleanliness".

Here's a more detailed explanation:

Mishnah and Kilayim:
The Mishnah, specifically the tractate Kilayim, deals with the prohibition of "diverse kinds" or "mixed planting". This law aimed to prevent the mixing of different species of plants in the same area, which was seen as a violation of the natural order.

Mustard's Nature:
Mustard plants, due to their tendency to spread, could easily violate these boundaries. This is why they were often planted at the edges of fields or in controlled areas, rather than in smaller gardens.

Not a blanket ban:

While there were restrictions on planting mustard near other crops, it was not a complete ban. The Talmud, which builds upon the Mishnah, doesn't explicitly forbid mustard seeds, but it does discuss the practical considerations of planting them.

Parable of the Mustard Seed:
The parable of the mustard seed in the New Testament, while using a small seed as its central image, was likely also playing on the audience's awareness of mustard's invasive potential, highlighting how something seemingly insignificant could grow into something substantial.

I say ---so the Jewish culture would have been well aware of the physical mustard seed scenario Jesus was using in this parable -----but not many would be aware of the Spiritual message that Jesus was putting forth in this Parable about how the mustard seed works to grow God"s Kingdom from small beginnings to something vast ------

The Mustard seed Parable spiritually represents the Kingdom of God and True Faith

Topical Lexicon
Overview
Strong’s Greek 4615 designates the mustard plant and, by metonymy, its seed. In the Gospels the imagery of the mustard seed serves Jesus’ preaching on the kingdom of God and on authentic faith.

So this is my take on this Parable ---

So this parable is about God;s Kingdom making progress---starting as a small blade of Grass and eventually become whole fields of grass that will carry on to God;s Heavenly Kingdom in the end --God's Kingdom grows gradually and steadily by planting small seeds (God's word mixed with His faith) in others by and through the Disciples and later by the power of the Holy Spirit who will appear after Jesus is finished His mission on this earth and through these means God's Kingdom is like the small mustard seed which expands and grows to be amassive tree ----

So again we see the cultivation comes from the inside first and is brought forth to the outside

--Contrast to the Pharisees who appeared cultivated on the outside and uncultivated on the inside ---they were tying to put the Cart before the horse in other words -----

My view is ------Today many in the pulpits are showing they are like The Pharisees --

I say ------The birds nesting in the Tree for me Spiritually represents God's Kingdom providing Protection ---Refuge and Shelter to all Believers who join the Kingdom ----God providing a place of rest and piece against all enemies ---

Ever notice how a few herbs planted in a garden will take over completely? We have found oregano and mint to be the worst. Chives spread like crazy also. Maybe this is true of many plants?

It is true of many things -- which sometime is why people plant those things to provide ground cover and choke out weeds. Our chives do remarkably poorly though. I think our soil is a bit depleted and that corner of the bed is very prone to winter burn when the wind blows.

Jesus has plenty to say about weeds (tares) elsewhere. Not sure if this comes up in Mark.

It's lovely stuff and makes a delightful tea. However, related to mint and spreads both by underground runners and by seed.

Mark 4:33-34
Snoopy's selection today is just two short verses. It looks very promising for meditation purposes. More later.

Mark shares this idea here with us for the second time. Must be important, right?

We know that Jesus teaches largely (not exclusively) in parables. And he shares some of the less obvious meanings with his inner circle.

So what does this mean? Do the disciples end up especially enlightened?

It seems not. We know that Jesus rebukes them for being thick headed on several occasions.

One of the twelve will betray him and one will deny him three times.

They will all scatter at the end and let him down. "Could you not watch with me this one hour?" is one of the most poignant lines in the whole Bible.

This might be a very human Jesus we are seeing here. A guy who needs to explain his deepest faith & longings to his closest associates.

Jesus knew how to Grab and hold His audience attention ----and it was by mainly Speaking in parables or by using allegorical language. ---This is so important today that Ministers learn how to grab and hold their flocks attention --and believe me many Preachers who not have that gift today ----I have seen people in church fall asleep many times when the Preacher is giving their Sermon --

Do the disciples end up especially enlightened?

Well--i say ---- it depends how you see enlightened i would think ----so at the end of verse 34 it says this ----
But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.

So would they be enlightened so to the true spiritual meaning of the Parable that Jesus preached to others ----I would say yes to that ----as I think only the ones in the crowd who had accepted the Father draw to have their hardened Heart changed to a receptive heart would have some understanding of the Message but not the true Spiritual understanding of the message as the Holy Spirit was not in play yet ---and the Disciples had access to gain the true Spiritual Message through Jesus ---
Jesus rebukes them for being thick headed on several occasions.
Well --you are right --He did rebuke them at times ---don't know if it was because they were think headed ----which means this ------Britannica Dictionary definition of THICK–HEADED. not intelligent or sensible : stupid.

But could have been because of the lack of Faith and their struggles with Spiritual Maturing --and sometimes with Gospel understanding ---until it was explained to them ----

These men were Fishermen before Jesus called them ---so they ere just Babes in following Jesus and had to change their whole way of thinking and life style ---and I think Jesus rebukes were more to guide them to a deeper meaning to do God's will and to be His Followers ----that is just my view on that -----

One of the twelve will betray him and one will deny him three times.
This is true --but we need to remember this was to bring about God the Father's plan to success ----so these people were Chosen by God the Father to betray Jesus ---it was not of their own doing --Satan had his part to play here -----

They will all scatter at the end and let him down. "Could you not watch with me this one hour?" is one of the most poignant lines in the whole Bible.
I think they were sleeping when this line was used by Jesus ------but you are right they did scatter away from Jesus when He was arrested ------but this was to fulfil a prophecy ----from Zechariah 13:7

Mark 14:27
New International Version
“You will all fall away,” Jesus told them, “for it is written: “’I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.’

AI

Yes, the scattering of Jesus' disciples during his arrest was indeed a fulfillment of prophecy.
Jesus himself quoted from Zechariah 13:7, saying, "Strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered," according to multiple gospel accounts. This prophecy foretold the dispersion of his followers when he, the shepherd, would be struck down.

Jesus certainly was human and displayed human traits as well as His divine traits ----

Mark 4:35-41

Jesus goes out on the lake with the disciples and stills a sudden storm. The disciples are afraid and they ask, "Who then is this? Even the wind and sea obey him."

Jesus has been imparting special knowledge to the disciples, yet they haven't figured him out yet.

Have we figured him out in our time???

interesting footnote from the AMP B

Footnotes

  1. Mark 4:37 The Sea of Galilee is famous for its sudden and severe storms, produced by winds that funnel through the passes and canyons of the surrounding hills and create severe turbulence on the water. As experienced fishermen, the disciples knew that this was an almost constant risk in their profession.

So here in Today's scripture that Jesus Speaks out a command to the wind to cease -----and the Wind listens and ceases ----

So the words we speak have power Folks ----

From Google -----
What is the power of our spoken words?

Just as God had the power to speak and create things from His spoken words, we too have been given the power to speak and create by our words. Proverbs 18:21(Amplified Bible) says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it [for death or life].”

Matthew 12:37 ESV

For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Read all for yourselves ---if you so desire ---

What does the Bible say about the power of words?

So Jesus says to His Disciples -----

“Let us go over to the other side ------Jesus climbs into the boat with them and of course He already knows that the wind will come up and cause the waters to get rough ----but doesn't tell them ---Why ?

Jesus had just revealed to them as well as other the 3 Parables ----the Sower ---the Seed and the Mustard Seed ---and then explained the Spiritual meanings to His Inner circle personally ----
So Jesus is now going to test their Faith and Trust in Him and in the Spiritual knowledge and Wisdom that was imparted to them through these 3 Parables ------

So they have their Spiritual Teacher with them in the Boat who is now sleeping peacefully -

So the wind comes and the waters get rough and what do these Fisherman who are probably accustom to some storms while fishing ----do ---they panic and are very afraid and call on their Spiritual leader and expect Him to do something -----

Their Faith is nil and their Trust in Jesus is given in a sign of ------Him not caring that they may die -------so it was all about their self preservation ---

verse 38 Amp B

38 But Jesus was in the stern, asleep [with His head] on the [sailor’s leather] cushion. And they woke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are about to die?”

and this Sums it up ---what Jesus says here ---

Verse 48 AMPB
40 Jesus said to them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith and confidence [in Me]?

I say ------The Disciples only had Limited understanding of Jesus' power and authority at this point ----

Their witnessing Him calm the wind with just Him speaking words ----made them Question who He really was -----

Verse 41
“Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?”

I say ----Their Spiritual lens is still veiled at this point -----

They are like the Carnal Christian of today ------in my view -----

They still need to believe by seeing ----and are unable to comprehend believing in the unseen ------

Snoopy has reached the end of Mark 4 and will pause for few days. Maybe longer.

Thanks to all who post here and follow these bible study threads.

Jesus has been imparting special knowledge to the disciples, yet they haven't figured him out yet.

Have we figured him out in our time???

My Personal take on this -----Not sue if this answers what is posted here though -------

Well what does------ figure out -------mean ---

From the Oxford Dictionary -----
figure out
phrasal verb of figure

solve a problem or discover the answer to a question.

I say ------So have we solved or discovered the mystery of who Jesus was and is --and what He says in Spiritual terms in our time

I think------ it depends on what your belief is ----more so that trying to figure it out -

Many believe in an Historical Jesus -----and many believe in a Divine Jesus -----and many believe Jesus didn't exist at all -----

So I think for people who believe that Jesus was an Historical Figure ---have figured out for themselves who Jesus was and still is today because if their belief ----

The sames holds true for the people who are true believers who believe Jesus was human figure as well as a Divine figure ==have for themselves figured out who Jesus was and is for today because of their belief-----

As far as the Disciples figuring out who Jesus is -and what He is saying ---they definitely have not come to any conclusion as to who Jesus is in their Midst --nor are they nor can they discern the Spiritual here

These Disciples are what are known today as babes in Christ --which is like Carnal Christians of today ---they are with the Divine --but in the learning stage ---on the Milk of the Scripture ----their Faith which comes by hearing the Word is not grounded and rooted in good soil yet -----they are like the seeds on the other soils that can't penetrate the ground ----their insight is veiled to Spiritual things yet -----so Jesus explains the Spiritual to them verbally so they can gain the right Knowledge of the Spiritual ----

I say -----They had to be spoon fed -----as The indwelling of the Holy Spirit had not come yet ---and Jesus was their only source for Verbal Spiritual understanding at that time --

The People who only Believe Jesus was and is a Historical Figure today are like the Disciples in the boat ---their spiritual insight is veiled ----they hear the Word but can't hear --they see but they don't see --they only have Human Faith which stays on the top of the ground and is snatched away --so all they have is their worldly intellect working trying to understand the spiritual -----

The People who Believe Jesus was and is Human and Divine today and have spent time daily listening to the Word their hardened soil is loosened up by and through the right Faith and this faith grows downward and takes root and so their Faith is grounded and rooted and stable and with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit they have access to understanding the Spiritual -----

So who was Jesus to us personally ??---was he a myth ---was he just a Human Prophet ----was he both human and divine -----was he the Son of God etc ----did he exist at all

So maybe -----How we see Jesus is how we personally will understand and think we have figure Him out ? But have any of us Really---- that is the Real Question ?

Just a correction for the next edition of the bible: The mustard seed is not the smallest seed.

I read somewhere that mustard has the smallest seed if you consider the ratio of seed to full grown plant. But you are correct, there are smaller seeds. . . Orchids, etc.
