The Lord arrives in a dense cloud on the top of the mountain after giving the people three days notice. They had to be sanctified, wash their clothes and avoid sexual relations while they waited.

God appears with smoke, thunder and lightning. The loud noise of a horn shakes the mountain. Aaron and Moses are to go up the mountain. The people are given clear boundaries and must remain at the foot of the mountain or they will die.

This is a very important statement here ----as God is Holy and can not be in the presents of uncleanness -----there was protocol to be in God's presents then ----just as there is now -----

God has not changed in that regard -----

Really curious about how this works (in your view) in the present day.

Receive Jesus as your Lord and Saviour -----He is the only one who can make you unclean today to be in God's presents -----

Snoopy's Snappy Review: Exodus 19: 9-25

God makes a dramatic appearance! Does God have something important to say?

Stay tuned.
This passage powerfully reminds us of God's kingly presence and his desire to tell his people important things. When God makes such a dramatic appearance, it's always with a purpose.

In this particular passage, God's preparing the Israelites for the giving of the 10 Commandments. He's setting the stage for a friendship with them based on his laws. It's a time of awe that reminds us of God's holiness

They had to be sanctified, wash their clothes and avoid sexual relations while they waited.

This was an external sanctification needed here for the Israelites as their sins were already covered for 1 year by the blood of animal sacrifices ----so sin was not a issue for them being in God's presents as it was looked after ----they had to be made clean on the outside to come into God's presents ---

So the external cleanliness directed by God was that they were purified by washing their clothes and refraining from having sexual intercourse ----- only then could they be in God's presents ----

Receive Jesus as your Lord and Saviour -----He is the only one who can make you unclean today to be in God's presents -----
Surely you meant to say clean in God's presence?

And how does this work for our brothers and sisters who are not Christians?

a thanks for the correction -----you are so right ----

And how does this work for our brothers and sisters who are not Christians?
Well if they are not Christians then as Scripture says they are away from God and their god is the god of this world ----

-They have free choice to either want to be washed Clean by Receiving Jesus as their Lord and Saviour -or reject the offer to be washed clean ------their sanctification comes only through receiving Jesus -now ---Animal Sacrifices - washing their clothes and abstaining from Sex will not sanctify them today to be in God's presents ----

God the Father sent His Only Son to purify us and make us Holy to be back in God's Presents --

Too bad God doesn't do this any more. God could set a few things straight for us with such an appearance, don't you think? :D

Yup. Coming up in tomorrow's reading.

Somehow, friendship based on laws doesn't sound quite right but I know what you mean.

OR that is human feeling of unworthiness playing itself out.

GOd is always in the presence of what some would call unclean.

I so wish we had a Jewish person on this forum. I'd love to know what the Talmud has to say about this chapter and the ban on sexual relations while waiting to hear from Godde.

Interesting read ------read all for yourselves ---I just posted this section ----

CELIBACY IN JUDAISM AT THE TIME OF CHRISTIAN BEGINNINGS HARVEY McARTHUR Wilmington, Vermont 05363

Got this from page 9 of the article ---there are 19 pages ----

CELIBACY IN JUDAISM 171 Question Two: "What was the significance of the stress on abstinence fromsexual relations under special circumstances?"

in Judaism, as in other religious traditions, there was a recognized tension between sex and the sacred.10 Abstention from sexual relations was a prerequisite for reception of the divine message and for participation in certain sacred rites. The basic passage in this connection is the Sinai story in Exod19, particularly vss. 10-15. Moses was instructed to prepare the people for the Sinai experience, and he said to the people (vs. 15),"Be ready by the third day; do not go near a woman.''

,"Be ready by the third day; do not go near a woman.''

Very helpful, unsafe, thank you. (And thank you for really respecting our need for good attribution and providing it.)

This is completely directed to straight, cis-gendered men. So LGBTQ2S+ people are largely exempt in this passage.

Actually, Paul implies that angels,as God's representatives were seen given the Law, not God Himself:
"God gave his law through angels to Moses, who was the mediator between God and the people (Galatians 3:19)."

Stephen teaches the same thing in Acts 7:53:
"You deliberately disobeyed God’s law, even though you received it from the hands of angels.”

So God can't tell his people things through angels now?

Why can't God speak through His angelic representatives just as Paul and Stephen say? Are you implying that the NT is wrong about this point??
I'm saying that God, being omnipotent as God is, had and has the ability to tell people things through his angels

I think Jae was questioning the long held assumption that there is no more direct revelation.
