Is martyrdom necessary for great change?
Sometimes, or so it seems. But not all martyrs work out that way. Gandhi was killed after the change he fought for, though, shot by one of his own people who opposed his attempts at maintaining unity between Hindus and Muslims. 75+ years later, we are still at risk of a war on the sub-continent.

And of course Christianity merrily went from being and honouring martyrs to creating them (the various executions of heretics, wise women, and so on). So I actually question how much good Christian martyrdom did in the long haul. Seems to me, it mostly just taught them that "kill thy enemy" is a valid strategy.

@unsafe Some people believe the signs and wonders ceased at the end of the Apostolic Age.

Miracles are certainly doing their job here in Acts.

Hmmm. Are they being performed solely for persuasive purposes? What about the person who benefits from the healing? Is that person just getting a lucky break?

Jesus often emphasized that the individual's faith was paramount in healings and exorcisms.

I think it's interesting that upthread we talk about Stephen's Christ-like attributes, yet one likely partly responsible for his martyrdom was Saul/Paul, who would go on to essentially form the early church. It's a bit like celebrating Judas...

I was always taught in Sunday school that Saul/ Paul did a major turnaround. Kind of an understatement really. :p

Perhaps Judas would have done the same if he hadn't collapsed & died in the field with his guts hanging out. Or (as another source tells us) hung himself.

@unsafe Some people believe the signs and wonders ceased at the end of the Apostolic Age.
Well people can believe that ----but that is not my belief -----

Miracles are certainly doing their job here in Acts.
I agree with you here -----and I think the signs and wonders provide a witness to God's word they certainly don't go against what God's word says ----

Hmmm. Are they being performed solely for persuasive purposes? What about the person who benefits from the healing? Is that person just getting a lucky break?
To the first part of the statement ---I think they are a powerful demonstration of God's power but these Miracles will not nor can they Change the heart of a person to accept the gospel ----only God the Father can do that ------Now -- God the Father would know who from viewing the miracle was repenting and was ready to have their heart changed to receive the Gospel and receive Salvation ----that is my view ------

To the last part of the statement ----I don't think the person who is healed by the Apostles thinks that they are getting a lucky break----I think the person would have felt a sense of joy and gratitude ---for their healing ---the Apostles were able to forgive sins which brings both Spiritual and Physical healing ----many of these healed people shouted praises to God right after their healing ---again this is my view -----

Saul's transformation from being born a Sinner to becoming a Saint -----shows us clearly and profoundly the difference in our 2 states -----sinful nature changed to divine nature -----

Which is known as ---Being Born Again -----

Yeah, Saul to Paul is the classic born again 180 turnaround scenario. Still, it is interesting to see him in his "Saul" period here. A biopic of Saul/Paul could be an interesting film. Don't recall it being done other than as part of broader historical pieces based on Acts.

These 9 gifts of the Spirit are definitely in place today -----these gifts were given in the Church Age by and through the indwelling and infilling of Holy Spirit and we are still in the Church age now -----

Today we have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit upon becoming Born Again and as the person Matures in their walk with Christ they become more filled with the Holy Spirit ---and the Holy Spirit gives these gifts as He wants to -----to whom he wants to ----

The gift of tongues is still in place ----I know that for a fact as I have this Gift myself ---
Healing is still in place today ----Casting out demons is still in place today ----etc

AI Overview

Yes, the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit, as described in 1 Corinthians 12, are generally believed to be for today by many Christians.

Here's a breakdown of the nine gifts:

  1. 1. Word of Wisdom:
This gift provides supernatural insight and guidance for making wise decisions.
  2. 2. Word of Knowledge:
This gift involves receiving supernatural knowledge about a person or situation.
  3. 3. Faith:
This gift is a special endowment of trust and confidence in God, enabling believers to step out in faith for specific purposes.
  4. 4. Gifts of Healing:
This gift enables believers to minister healing to others through the power of the Holy Spirit.
  5. 5. Working of Miracles:
This gift involves supernatural interventions and manifestations of God's power.
  6. 6. Prophecy:
This gift is the ability to speak forth divinely inspired messages for encouragement, edification, and comfort.
  7. 7. Discerning of Spirits:
This gift enables believers to discern the source of spiritual activity, whether it is from God, demonic forces, or human origin.
  8. 8. Different Kinds of Tongues:
This gift involves speaking in a language unknown to the speaker, often for personal edification or as a sign to unbelievers.
  9. 9. Interpretation of Tongues:
This gift enables believers to understand and interpret the messages spoken in tongues.
The gifts are not meant to be a source of pride or division but rather a means for believers to serve one another and to demonstrate the power and presence of God in the world.

Acts 8: 9-25

A man named Simon has been performing magic in that city and amazing everyone.

But when the people accept Philip's message, they start getting baptized. Even Simon becomes a believer and stays close to Philip.

Peter and John are sent to Samaria from Jerusalem. They pray for those who have been baptized so that they will receive the Holy Spirit. They place their hands on the people.

Simon sees Peter and John's power and offers them money to grant him the same ability. Simon is rebuked by Peter and told to repent.

Peter and John start back to Jerusalem.

What was this magic that Simon was performing? Clearly it did not come from God.

Interesting that baptism alone did not grant the Holy Spirit. Peter and John had to lay hands on the people for this to happen.

What was this magic that Simon was performing? Clearly it did not come from God.
On my walk yesterday, I was listening an Ancients podcast on the Apocryphal gospels. The scholar being interviewed (she's done a book on early Christianity recently) commented that there were many claimed magicians and miracle workers in the classical world at that time and that Jesus himself was likely seen as one of those by pagans (less so by Jews, but that's not to say some did not see him that way). Because of the nature of paganism (multiple gods and other spirits who are capable of intervening in the world) there were myriad books on magic around and many claiming to be able to heal, etc. So Simon was really just part of a trend in that era, kind of like the 1st century Roman version of our New Age spirituality. The source of their magic was basically said to be the gods/spirits, IIRC.

And here's the ones on the Essenes that I mentioned recently:

So in these first few verses here in Acts 8:9-25

AMPC
9 But there was a man named Simon, who had formerly practiced magic arts in the city to the utter amazement of the Samaritan nation, claiming that he himself was an extraordinary and distinguished person.

10 They all paid earnest attention to him, from the least to the greatest, saying, This man is that exhibition of the power of God which is called great (intense).

11 And they were attentive and made much of him, because for a long time he had amazed and bewildered and dazzled themh his skill in magic arts.

I say ------So this man Simon shows us ----that he use to practice sorcery ----which God hates gives great warnings about -----he was prideful ---he had feelings of Grandeur ---and he was peddling the occult that was amazing people which had their thinking twisted and corrupted and deceived -----

The Greek word for Sorcery is this ------and this is where our word Pharmacy comes from

Strong's Concordance
Lexical Summary
pharmakeia: Sorcery, witchcraft

1. the use of drugs, potions, and enchantments
2. poisoning ("pharmacy")
3. (by extension) the occult, witchcraft
4. (by implication) the remedy, the cure
{literally or figuratively}

Topical Lexicon
Definition and Scope
Strong’s Greek 5331 denotes the practice of manipulating human life or circumstances through potions, drugs, or magical arts that invoke supernatural influence apart from the living God. In Scripture it is consistently grouped with sins that fracture covenant fidelity, whether toward God (idolatry) or neighbor (hatred, jealousy, murder).

While the modern term “pharmacy” descends from the same root, the biblical concern is not legitimate medicine but the use of substances or rituals to gain illicit spiritual power or to deceive.

I say ----So this was definitely not from God as paradox3 said in her 2nd post above ----

This shows us that we humans can be gullible and can be persuaded to believe the false Doctrine that is preached today ---like --God's love will save you -----do good works and your heaven bound ---Jesus was just a prophet ----erc

So in verse 12 ---Philip arrives and is preaching the Good News and these people are lapping it up and believing him ---even Simon --and were baptised ----Now this Baptism was by Water here folks --not the Baptism of the Holy Spirit -----Water Baptism does not give you the Holy Spirit ----it is done as profession of your Faith only -----

AI Overview

In Acts 8:12, baptism by water is presented as a public declaration of faith in Jesus Christ, following belief in the gospel message.

so verses 14 and 15 --are important ---as the Apostles together Prayed for these people to have the Holy Spirit ---so first they prayed and then Peter and John go there -----

AMPC
14 Now when the apostles (special messengers) at Jerusalem heard that [the country of] Samaria had accepted and welcomed the Word of God, they sent Peter and John to them,

15 And they came down and prayed for them that the Samaritans might receive the Holy Spirit;

I say
-----So now we see Peter and John arriving to lay hands on these people so they can receive the Holy Spirit ----these People now who were once excluded from God's Chosen are now being accepted into the fold ----

-So why did they get the Holy Spirit through the laying on of hands and not when they Believed that Jesus was the Messiah ----

Found this which gives some explanation ---you can read all --I just posted the summery

Summary – Question 19

Scripture records that when the people in the area of Samaria first received the Word of God there was a unique event which took place. These people believed in Jesus Christ, were baptized in water, yet did not receive the Holy Spirit.

Therefore, Peter and John came down from Jerusalem and laid hands on the Samaritans. At that point, they received the Holy Spirit. While some people use this as an argument for a second reception of the Holy Spirit it is clearly not the case.

To begin with, the text makes it explicitly that the Samaritans had not received the Holy Spirit. Consequently they were not looking for any second work of the Spirit – rather they were looking for His initial coming.

There is also the point of view that the faith of the Samaritans was not saving faith. Their belief was similar to the crowds who saw the miracles of Jesus.
Jesus knew what was in their heart and did not entrust Himself to them.
This is one possible explanation which attempts to explain what took place.

Whatever the explanation may be, there are a number of things we know for certain.

First, this is the only episode in the New Testament where there was a delay in the reception of the Holy Spirit. Indeed, this never happened before or since.

We also know that this was not a second blessing for the Samaritans since none of them had received the Holy Spirit.

An argument that has been put forward is that until the Gentiles would later receive the Holy Spirit each believer in Jesus, who was not a Jew, was given the Holy Spirit by the laying on of hands by the apostles.

There is also the fact that it was obvious that these Samaritans had not received the Holy Spirit upon belief. This seems to indicate they were expecting some outward sign to confirm the reception of the Spirit.

It is a fact that the apostles were Jesus’ special representatives.

Furthermore, Peter was promised by Jesus that he would be given the keys to the kingdom of heaven.

This promise was fulfilled.

The Book of Acts records Peter opening the door of the kingdom to the Jews, Samaritans, and Gentiles.

The best explanation for the delay concerns the nature of the Samaritans as well as their worship.

They had no dealings with the Jewish people. Indeed, they had their own temple and their own worship system. Had they received the Holy Spirit apart from identifying with the Jewish apostles the separation between the Jews and Samaritans would have continued.
However, with the laying on of hands of the apostles it became clear that they were all “one in Christ.”

One final point to emphasize is that this was certainly not the norm for the church age.
As we stated, this was a unique event in the history of the church. Therefore, we should not attempt to find any pattern from what took place so long ago in Samaria.

I say ---So today the scripture clearly tells you how you are saved and what you have to do and believe to be saved --and when you follow the instructions you receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit at that moment ---Romans 10:9-----there is no delay today -----and no laying on of hands can give anyone the Holy Spirit today ------

So now we are back to Simon who now sees what Peter does and he wants what Peter has and even offers him money to have this power -----

So here we see one who got water Baptised professing his Faith in Christ with the wrong Heart and Motive and Peter quickly rebukes him ----and tells him to repent and -

Verse 22----- pray to the Lord that, if possible, this ]contriving thought and purpose of your heart may be removed and disregarded and forgiven you.

Simon then asks for Peter and John to pray for him ====

verse 25 speaks for itself -----

25 Now when [the apostles] had borne their testimony and preached the message of the Lord, they went back to Jerusalem, proclaiming the glad tidings (Gospel) to many villages of the Samaritans [on the way].

At this point in history, there were many claimed magicians and miracle workers as @Mendalla pointed out.

Angels interacted with humans on earth and the Holy Spirit was a positive & benevolent force.

Demons and evil spirits were believed to be responsible for possessing and infecting people with various ailments.

Demons could shriek loudly as we see in today's reading. The gospels inform us that demons could decide who to inhabit & infect.

Against this supernatural backdrop we have today's story which is fascinating to consider.

Anyone have a metaphorical interpretation? I am sure I could have dreamed one up a few years ago.

Could the moral of this story simply be that the blessings of the Spirit cannot be bought with money?

Acts 8:26-40

As directed by an angel of the Lord, Philip heads south on the road that goes from Jerusalem to Gaza.

He encounters an Ethiopian eunuch who is returning home from Jerusalem. He is sitting in his chariot reading from Isaiah. The eunuch invites Philip to guide him in his reading.

Philip proclaims the good news about Jesus. As the two travel on the road, they come to water and the eunuch requests baptism.

When they emerge from the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatches Philip away. The eunuch goes on his way rejoicing.

Philip finds himself at Azotus. He evangelizes in all the towns until he reaches Caesarea.

Today we have another road story. It echoes Jesus on the road to Emmaus explaining the scriptures to two disciples.

And Philip has indeed been teleported to another location as @Mendalla mentioned earlier.

More magic coming up tomorrow on the road to Damascus.

So in today's Scripture ----Philip is directed to go to a certain place by an Angel of the Lord --and Philip obeys ----this place he is directed to is a Desert ----

This is important to note here ----as the desert is dry and unfruitful ----so we are about to see how God can produce Spiritual Fruit from a day unfruitful place -----

He meets ----Posting the Scripture here verse 27---AMP --------an Ethiopian eunuch [a man of great authority], a court official of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians, who was in charge of all her treasure. He had come to Jerusalem to worship

So where these Eunuch in the Bible ------read all for yourselves ---just posting this part

A eunuch is a man who has been castrated for the purpose of trusted servitude in a royal household (see Esther 1:10; 4:4; and Daniel 1:9). A king would often castrate his servants to ensure they would not be tempted to engage in sexual activity with others in the palace (specifically, the royal harem) or to prevent their plotting an overthrow (eunuchs were incapable of setting up a dynasty of their own). Eunuchs have been employed in many civilizations, including the Ancient Middle East, Ancient Greece and Rome, China, Korea, and Thailand. Jesus mentions them in Matthew 19:12.

I say
So this eunuch went to Jerusalem to worship and he was returning home when Philip met him ---he was sitting reading from the book of Isaiah ----

The Holy Spirit here is just not asking him to join this person but giving a command to Philip to go join yourself to his chariot---and Philip obeys the command ----

I say -----So if Philip who had free choice ----by the way -----had decided not to obey the first instruction given by the Angel of the Lord then God's plan would have been Hindered -----this is why Obedience to God's directions is very important to carry out -----

God does speak to this Children today so when you come to the Fork in the Road ---you can take the right road to success if you listen and obey his direction ------

1755272430768.png

Philip ask this person if he understands what he is reading ----and of course this person can read the Logos but has not the Spiritual understanding which is the Rhema word to decipher the real meaning --and Notice that this person is not afraid or does he feel ashamed that he needs help to get the right Spiritual understanding as he quickly says to Philip

----AMPC verse 31
31 And he said, How is it possible for me to do so unless someone explains it to me and guides me [in the right way]?

I say --
--I think many people today do not like to admit that they can't grasp the Spiritual meaning of the Scripture on their own way of thinking and so they have to conjure up this theory that there are different ways to interpret Scripture ---

This man realizes that he need the help and guidance in the right way to be able to know the Spiritual meaning -----so kudos to him --I say ---

God the Father changed His heart to be receptive to the message and at some point they come to some water and this person whats to be Water Baptised ---

When they came up from the water ---The Holy Spirit caught up -(raptured) ---- Philip and took him to Azotus ---

Verse 40 AMPC
40 --Philip was found at Azotus, and passing on he preached the good news (Gospel) to all the towns until he reached Caesarea.

I say -----So we see there are 4 raptures that have taken place -Elijah --Enoch --Philip and Jesus ----
and there is one more to come at the end of the Church age -----

Speaking of eunuchs. There was also the practice in the Middle Ages of producing castrati as future opera or church singers.

Young boys were castrated before puberty to prevent the deepening of their voices. The vocal range of a castrato was not identical to a woman's but it was more like an alto than a soprano. A unique sound, apparently.

The practice took place in France and Italy. I read that it was not outlawed until 1903.

Yikes!

WOW ! interesting ----

Found this on Google

Who was the last castrato voice?

Alessandro Moreschi

The last of the castrati was Alessandro Moreschi, who died in 1924 and made gramophone recordings that provide the only direct evidence of a castrato's singing voice.

This is apparently that recording

Ave Maria · Alessandro Moreschi

That's fascinating, thanks @unsafe.

Back to the text.
I wonder why the writer used a eunuch (riding a chariot, no less) as his main character. This lends an exotic or fanciful air to the story and it reminds me of a parable.

AI Overview

eunuchs in ancient times, specifically those with wealth and high status, did use chariots. In the biblical account of the Ethiopian eunuch, he is depicted as traveling in a chariot, reading from a scroll, and holding a position of significant wealth and authority. This indicates that eunuchs, particularly those in positions of power, were not excluded from using chariots as a mode of transportation.

The eunuch's chariot was spacious enough to accommodate multiple people. The chariot was also equipped with a driver, indicating a level of organization and status associated with the eunuch's travel.

The association of eunuchs with chariots is not limited to this biblical narrative. In various cultures and historical periods, eunuchs held positions of power and responsibility within royal courts and administrations. Their access to chariots would be consistent with their social standing and the need for efficient and comfortable transportation.
