So in verse 40 it mentions David who was a Shepard boy would be use to carrying a staff
it is mentioned in this verse that David took the staff with him when he went up against Goliath -
--------God has mentioned it for a reason in my view ----

What purpose would this stick serve David going up against a Goliath -?????----

Thus the shaft or standing upright in the story of mist & ET ixs ... way beyond mortal authority ...

The mysterious context of a far greater psyche as abstract and out there? Thus some attempt to expand their intellect while others stoically fixed ... caned out?

So in the Scripture mentioned in OP we see that David says this when he rescued his sheep from the lion and the bear -------verse 34
34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep sheep for his father. And when there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb from the flock, 35 I went after him and struck him and delivered it out of his mouth.

So David would have been carrying his staff when he went to rescue his sheep ----so we see it can be used as a weapon for battle ------

We know that Moses followed God's instructions and struck a rock with his staff and water poured out ----so the staff is a sign of God's power -----

The shaft doesn't go very deep in your world does it @unsafe thus superficial!

What purpose would this stick serve David going up against a Goliath -?????----
If it was anything like a medieval quarterstaff or an asian Bo (Bō - Wikipedia -- I think one of the TNMT used one of those?) it can be a very powerful weapon in the hands of a trained person

But he didn't use his staff at all. Just one of his "five smooth stones".

To go back to my earlier comments, a la Malcolm Gladwell, does it make a difference to the story if David was simply more skilled at killing than Goliath?

Goliath is infantry. Solid, large, muscular, with big bones and big weapons. (The tank)

David is the sharpshooter, the trained assassin, one with an unerring eye for the weakness (the forehead bone, in this case) of his prey. (The armed drone)

Jewish people, on the whole, do not despise "cleverness"...David is a much revered figure in their mythology, despite his very human misbehaviour.

Sometimes he is but he is also referred to as Satan with the meaning of "adversary".
See number 2 and 5.

The Jewish cleverness comes from the ambi portion of the Hebrew undercurrent! From there things in the story can go either way ... depends on how you privately read intuit! It is out there beyond us as the physics state about new particle studies ... the past ones may not be how they appeared ... improper manifestations?

Hoo would know ...

Waterfall ------the article says this ----- The Second Book of Samuel states that it was a man named Elhanan, rather than David,

This person did not read the scripture properly ----the scripture verse in 2 Samuel which he forgets to post --by the way -----says that this man killed the brother of Goliath ---not Goliath himself -----

I posted the scripture in 2 Samuel verse in my first post --as this was already brought up by Redbaron on page 1 ----reposting it here to clear up what this article says ---

2 Samuel 21:19 -----clearly says -----that Elhanan killed Goliath's Brother ------not Goliath

19 In another battle with the Philistines at Gob, Elhanan son of Jair the Bethlehemite killed the brother of Goliath the Gittite, who had a spear with a shaft like a weaver’s rod.

So can you really trust what the article says is the question -------This certainly blows a hole in the theory that David didn't really defeat Goliath ------Just saying ---

Do the wrong's always find themselves up against the stoic, always right that are not aware of the potential of being wrong when stuck in a hole?

Learning movement is thus built into stored inertia ... prepare for it to explode into what is out there ... like grass in a cow pasteur ...

Could generate a funny satyr ... the donkey caring for the herd?

What's the chance in quantum figuring ...

GordW ---you said -----If it was anything like a medieval quarterstaff or an asian Bo (Bō - Wikipedia -- I think one of the TNMT used one of those?) it can be a very powerful weapon in the hands of a trained person

I say ---well I don't doubt this is true -----the scripture does indicate that he took his staff which would have been his Shepard's staff that he used when he was Sheparding his sheep ---

if it was a medieval weapon he would have probably had to get it from someone but he refused all armour etc to protect himself -----so I doubt it was a worrier's weapon -------

there is another view that it could have been a Staff Sling ------which apparently is mentioned in the Michelangelo's sculptures ---whatever they are ------I didn't bother to look at that up ----

Here are 3 different Bible saying the same thing -----read more translations here

New International Version
Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd's bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.

New Living Translation
He picked up five smooth stones from a stream and put them into his shepherd’s bag. Then, armed only with his shepherd’s staff and sling, he started across the valley to fight the Philistine.

English Standard Version
Then he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the brook and put them in his shepherd’s pouch
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And just a note -----from what i have read many Shepards carried sling shots as they used them to ward off animals that would come after their sheep ---

My view -----so it sounds like after a time they would get good at using this weapon as it was most likely used often ------So David would have been skilled at using his sling ------

very interesting video -----it is about 15 min in length -----for anyone interested -----

Sergio & Rhoda in Israel

Today, we are visiting Tell es-Safi, an excavation site of what is believed to be the ancient city of Gath, the hometown of Goliath, and four other giants. Archaeologists found here monumental structures and large building stones that provide a better understanding of the city where giants once lived. They also found a colossal city gate which could be the gate where David pretended to be a mad man when he was running away from Saul. So join us on this expedition as we drive to the excavation site and explore the findings.

@unsafe .... do you sometimes feel shafted by firm indoctrination that you should not process or think?

Just go by the previous laws set up by folks intent on winning something ...
