Response from William Shatner, "
What a heartbreaking week it has been. Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor. From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him. I was filled with affection and admiration for him and his work.

My heart goes out to Sunny and his family. He will be deeply missed."

Sad to lose such a great actor but he had quite a long and diverse career. Besides Trek, his other big pop culture role was Charles Xavier, aka Professor X, in the X-Men films and more recently in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (in fact, his final appearance, coming later this year, will be in Doomsday, the next Avengers film). But aside from his two best known roles, he appeared in a host of roles on stage, film, and television. I note from his stage and screen history that he started acting on stage the year I was born.

Stewart had a long-standing friendship with fellow stage and screen star Ian McKellen. The two most famously played opposite each other in the X-Men movies, with McKellen as the friend turned enemy Magneto opposite Stewart's Prof. X. But they knew each other well before that and did some stage work together in the same time period as their roles on X-Men. McKellen even got ordained so he could officiate at Stewart's third wedding. McKellen has paid tribute to Stewart.

Magneto also appears in the new Avengers movie so we will get to see them together one last time.
