There's a certain irony that the one member of the trio ZZ Top without a beard was the one actually named "Beard". Frank Beard was the band's drummer from the beginning (1969) until he recently entered hospice. Sadly, he has now left us at the age of 77. But, like so many of the musicians we are losing, he leaves us with a legacy of music that we can enjoy for years to come thanks to recordings and videos.
Not sure where this leaves the band. Original guitarist Billy Gibbons is still going strong (76, turns 77 in December) but longtime (though oddly, not original) bassist Dusty Hill passed in 2021. Elwood Francis took over on bass for their recent tours.
The band played solid southern blues-rock and became unlikely MTV hits with videos like "Sharp Dressed Man" and "Legs" in the eighties.
