Given that there are no other stores in its market segment still in business (though there is apparently an attempt to revive Zellers now that The Bay is gone and someone else holds the trademark), I don't think you can fairly say that. For many, as @Kimmio Laughterlove indicates, it is the best option available. Even some of the "Dollar" (usually they are more like $2-5 nowadays) stores, which have kind of taken over the bargain niche once held by brands like Biway and Bargain Harold's, are American chains.

And this as well. They are providing employment for probably thousands of Canadian workers, many of them students, entry level, and post-retirement in need of income to supplement their pensions.
I liked Zellers. There was a big uproar about Zellers moving out and Target moving in. Target was an American store that failed in Canada. I never went there but I heard it was disappointing.

My mom and I used to eat sometimes at the Zellers diner at the local mall. Delicious and cheap

Perhaps patriotic Canadians should rather move to another continent?
Moving abroad doesn’t make Canadians less Canadian; it gives them a chance to share what makes Canada special with the world.

In my case, I moved to South Korea, a country which has a good relationship with Canada, a country which has never bullied Canada, nor threatened to swallow up Canada

Depends on the rubbins ... some things are contageous in severe friction and such close relations can make one familiar enough that one believes they are critical of self ... self being a complex identity that most people ignore because intelligence is said to be evil compared to opinionization!

I expect opinions are rampant ... being the divisions as they are ...
