It's a republican bill - how is this Obama's fault and Trump is some sort of passive recipient? He is not at all a passive inheritor...he's anything but passive. And he's plowing full speed ahead with everything he can push through - it's not happening all by itself.

Obama said from the beginning that the hope and change platform was up to citizens to preserve, to get involved, not just sit back and wait for him to do it all. Now they really do have an authoritarian trying to singlehandedly change the government .

I never realized until now how much power the President of the US has build into his job description. Really questionning the democracy.
Can anybody tell me if Canadas Prime Minister has some hidden powers he could use but simple hasn't yet?

Don't think so. The Governor General (Queen's representative) might? But I don't even think that's the case - at one time it was.

But...There was the October Crisis.

Really, a PM with a large majority (like Justin) doesn't need any further special powers. Since our PM, unlike the US President, actually directly controls the majority party in the House, they can get bills through far more easily than a President can.

Yes, but he still has to bring it to Parliament. TRump just signs a paper. Erdogan just sends troops and has people arrested and fired....

The POTUS has immense power. Someone should talk with him. Really. Not kidding. Clanging around and shouting obsenities at him is not going to stop a guy like him. He really thinks it's mean and cannot see it from the other direction.

Like Merkel - who politely explained the Geneva Convention, and Theresa May who has invited him for a state visit. Not to "appease" but because he listens to people who treat him with respect and squashes people who don't. However people feel about him - I think they have the experience to understand that mindset - he wouldn't be the first leader like that.

All of the imperial powers amassed by Barack Obama and George W. Bush—to kill Americans without due process, to detain suspects indefinitely, to strip Americans of their citizenship rights, to carry out mass surveillance on Americans without probable cause, to suspend laws during wartime, to disregard laws with which he might disagree, to conduct secret wars and convene secret courts, to sanction torture, and so on—have been inherited by Donald Trump. But as tempting as it may be, don’t blame Donald Trump for what is to come. After all, President Trump didn’t create the police state. He merely inherited it. As long as we continue to put our politics ahead of our principles—moral, legal and constitutional—“we the people” will lose.

Rule by Brute Force: The True Nature of Government
The torch has been passed to a new president. All of the imperial powers amassed by Barack Obama and George W. Bush —to kill American citizens...

This guy has a point really, we'd be naive to think otherwise.

Trump himself is just a symbol, a tool (pun intended) for what a large part of America acually believes. He is, at this time, the face of America. But however cruel and selfish it may be, it is at the very least (somewhat) "honest". (Ok, he's being honest about the fact that he's dishonest) Nevertheless, he's beginning to do doing openly what the other governments did covertly.

Maybe this is just what the world needs at this time, to bring it all out to the surface so we as a people can deal with it. It's also, I believe, a time of opportunity for Americans. The opportunity to make the "right choice", which is really, the "only" choice, since we've seen, in our lifetimes, how bad the wrong choice can be.

We're standing at a cross road, and this time the choice is obvious. The Sword of Cleavage is dividing the people.

The Christ said:
Do you think I came to bring peace on earth? No, I tell you, but division. From now on there will be five in one family divided against each other, three ....

The Queen will probably be polite and gracious and diplomatic as she has her whole life (I read that she's concerned about being dragged into the political fray) - she's had various dictators visit her palace numerous times - and Charles, I read, is going to pick an appropriate time, if they can pencil it in - to politely discuss his environmental views and concerns.

It would be so British of Charles to politely discuss the environment.

The only one in that family, currently, who is any sort of a risk taker is Harry, but I very highly doubt he'd pull any Bond maneuvers (but hey, he'd be great cast in a movie). Maybe he'd say something cheeky - but I doubt even that. The royals don't rock the political boat.

There's a petition in Britain to disinvite Trump to a state visit. I think they should invite him and show him openness and hospitality despite their differences. Try it first. That's diplomacy.

Harry'd be a good choice to chat with Trump. They might even get along. Really, he'd probably make a good diplomat.

Or, the Queen could parachute in with Daniel Craig...I just remembered that. They are not all dry and stuffy. She's got a sense of humour.

Yes, I had my doubts she would be able to lift up that sword for the final blow.
