Yesterday, I sat in a graduation ceremony. Not unusual for me given my wife's penchant for collecting University Degrees with more fervour than I have ever collected anything.
This time around it was not my wife giving me yet another occasion to be proud of her but rather it was our eldest daughter who contributed to the family collection of important pieces of paper with snippets of Latin here and there.
Yesterday, Grace graduated from Brock University with a B.A. (hon) with First Class Standing in Sociology. I for my part used what my vocation has prepared me to do better than some others. I taught the families of other grads what loud cheering really sounds like. Was disappointed in her sister (my other daughter) and her brother (my only son) who chose, at that moment to stay sombre and dignified. Did manage to put other larger families to shame volume wise all on my own.
The look on Grace's face upon my cheer was classic, "Yea. That was my Dad."
Kimberly, who is faculty at Brock asked for and was given, the opportunity to hood Grace so it was a pretty big family event.
Next on her "To Conquer" list is a Master's Degree in Sociology. She has already been accepted to Brock for that work and they gave her a very sizeable scholarship to contribute to expenses.
I'm going to have to think about stepping up the game if I want to continue my silver standing in the family academic olympics. No way I'm catching Kimberly for the gold.
Between the three of us, Kimberly, Grace and myself we have 10 prettyish pieces of paper from Canadian Universities telling us in partial Latin that we have been busily engaged in keeping off of the streets.
Three cheers on a second generation of egg-headery!
