Novel Coronavirus

It has been explained over and over. What don't you understand? Help me understand.
If asymptomatic people are not getting tested and people without covid that have colds are staying home, and people with covid that do not know if they have it for sure, are staying home but not getting tested once they feel well but still might be carriers...how can they stop it? I do not understand the logic. Maybe if absolutely everyone stays home for 2 weeks (at least...the stats are showing even mild cases are taking longer to recover), even healthcare workers, ambulance, fire, cops, essential services, food deliverers...everyone...they could stop it. But that is not possible. It seems to be a better use of resources would be to test every person, keep the people who are mildly ill or asymptomatic at home for 2 weeks no matter what their jobs are, and only put the serious cases in hospital.

This is what a friend just posted on FB. She is an RN:

"I know it’s everywhere and we’re all sick of hearing about it. I was afraid to post anything for fear of reactions. But... I’m a registered nurse and a mom, wife, grandma, daughter, sister, aunty, niece, friend. I’m also sick right now and home for my second week. I will be returning to work right as the first big wave starts to crash in Canada. I hear two sides and I do understand why people believe both. Those following restrictions and those that think it’s no big deal. Here’s what we need you to understand. WE, Your health care providers, are scared! SCARED! We, who take care of major bleeds, colds and flus, cancer, infections, diseases, everything! WE ARE VERY AFRAID! Not because, as a nation, we won’t get through it. Our nation will. We just don’t know who won’t be with us on the other side. Now you think about ten people you care about. Which 2 are going to the hospital? Which 1 will need months of care and may die?? 50% of those going to the hospital are under 50 yrs of age. No one is getting out of this untouched. No one! The goal is to stagger the infected so that our health care can keep up and to protect the weakest. That’s it. Nothing fancy. We can’t stop it. It’s coming. And the wave is gonna crash. But YOU can create barriers and slow it down and help to stagger it so it comes in surges and not a tsunami. We need people healing as others get sick. Not, everyone sick at the same time. You CAN do that! Stay home. Clean like your life depends on it, cause it does. Social distance. Don’t go anywhere you don’t have to. And share nothing!!! No drinks, smokes or dubbies. We should be so lucky to come out of this just “bored”. Let me tell you, when your health care providers are saying they are afraid...you too had better be damn scared!! I love you! ❤️"

That does make sense of course. It's not practical for many reasons. Can you even imagine how people would react to mandatory testing? I'm thinking of people who don't like mandatory vaccinations or mandatory seatbelts. Even if people did comply, many wouldn't for a variety of reasons and could still carry the virus. What if you get tested today then came in contact with the virus tomorrow? Even if there were enough tests, which there isn't, how do we go about testing everyone? I picture lineups and crowds which increase the risk of infection.

So many questions.

I don’t know. That’s why I wonder if they might at some point have to accept this is a bad virus in circulation that can’t be stopped (what/ when is that point?), and work harder on a vaccine.

Would you consider a pet or sharing someone's? An older cat maybe?

I know you meant it kindly, Waterfall -but my family of origin would be very amused at your suggestion -as I have a cat phobia.......
Settles back, folks, and I'll tell you a sad tale.......
When I was about six years old, a stray cat made its home with us. The cat had kittens which fascinated me. I would run home from kindergarten, climb under the house, and watch the cat with her new kittens. If one strayed, she would pick it with her mouth and return the kitten to her side.....
One day , neither the cat not the kittens were there. After a few days, the cat returned without her kittens. I kept asking the cat where were her kittens?
My sister Sue, was eighteen months younger than me, and we use to play dress-ups with this box of Mum's old clothes.
(Prepare yourselves, trauma time!).....

I came across one mangled kitten after another in that box. I screamed so loud that the man next door came running over. As I sobbed, he tried to comfort me. He explained that the cat may not have had enough milk to feed her kittens, and had killed them quickly to prevent them slowly starving. He said, "It's the Law of Nature".

At that time Mum and Dad were often arguing about money. I said to Sue that Mum and Dad would probably have to kill us. She was both wiser and didn't suffer from an overly fertile imagination like me, "They would never do that!"
I replied, "You don't understand, they don't want to kill us, but they may have to - it's called "The Law of Nature".

To this day, if a cat brushes past my legs, I start shaking.......

Exactly! They should test everybody every day for two weeks. Then anybody who is still sick after that time should be destroyed so Kimmio can get on with her life.
Did I suggest anything of the sort? No I did not.

But whatabout Trump? He’s probably being tested every five minutes while millions of Americans have no healthcare for anything they might need it for.

It's not either/or. They are also working on a vaccine and treatments.

Did you read what my nurse friend wrote? Our system cannot handle a sudden influx of sick people that this virus could create. The curve has to be flattened. Ideally, fewer people would get sick. Slowing the rate is a start.

I have a question:
If they isolated the Coronavirus two months ago and most vaccines use dead virus', what's the hold up for the vaccine?

Also, how long does it take to figure out if you've had the virus, whether you've got a lifetime immunity or any kind of immunity and won't need a vaccine? I realize there are reports that some have been reinfected, but was it from the same strain?

I think so. I’ve been inundated with reading about covid. What else is happening in the world? Anything?

You seem to think the purpose of the restrictions is to "stop" the virus. The purpose actually is to reduce the rate of spread - it is unrealistic to think it will be "stopped". People are hard at work on vaccines already.

Last evening I was hearing about some newer testing being developed - to see if people have developed antibodies to the virus - ie meaning they would have had it at some prior time - and would be unlikely to get it again. They seemed to suggest that would be a simpler check - and would would give perhaps more accurate numbers. Made good sense to me.

1/3 of all colds are caused by a strain of coronavirus. I wonder when they say “coronavirus cases” in the news, if they always mean covid 19.

It’s also a mystery as to why kids are not getting sick.

Oh boy, sorry about that....I didn't know.
I understand, I have a similar traumatic story....thanks to my brother when we were younger...he thought it would be cool to dig up our pet cat that had died and show it to me (about a month after she died) I was traumatized at 6 years old for quite awhile.

You make a really important point Pilgrims about how kids understand what they hear. It's an important consideration for all of us who are now interacting with kids, or listening to news etc when they are around. Lets do our best to make sure they feel valued, loved, and not an inconvenience at this uncertain time. And look out for any kids we know of who might not be in homes that can manage this.
