Novel Coronavirus

I wish I lived on Bowen Island, that has closed off from the rest of Vancouver. Or one of the small Gulf Islands hardly anyone ever visits, so the virus isn't there. They're probably living like normal human beings.

There's a big...huge...difference between the risk of death and risk of catching the virus. Yes, the virus will spread. Yes they are right. But in Canada most cases are not critical.

It feels like a big social experiment to me.
I think a problem with this statement is that it is focused on the individual risk of getting the virus - "most cases are not critical". The social distancing measures are to flatten that rise in cases to preserve the ability of our health care system to care for those who DO need intensive care services - for any reason, not just COVID.

Someone at work said that at a past event of a shooting ( forgot the location, but likely in the states), they had a large number of victims and about 70 people who needed a ventilator. At that occaision, someone smart figured out how one ventilator can be hooked up to four people. I think they are benefitting from that invention now. Did she really say 70 or 17 ? Anyway, in any case they didn’t have enough but they made the best out of it.

But not if ppl have to call 911 for minor injuries because nobody will go near them.

How many died in shootings or gun accidents in 2020 so far? The perspective feels skewed.

I have to use a laundromat. That's a concern. It's the one at the park and they have stepped up their cleaning schedule.

I have my own washing machine. I normally wash most of my clothing in cool water, reserving "hot" for linens, bathrobes, etc. Because I'm exposed at work, I am washing clothing more frequently, and in warm water.

You get that it isn’t the actual numbers of deaths to date but the possibility that the hospitals will be overrun if hundreds of thousands get sick. Right?

i just can’t follow you. This constant comparison to colds
There are lots of reasons the hospitals could be overrun during this time of pandemic, that are not due to the virus, if this goes on and on. The only way to stop it is to test everyone, and isolate the people who have it from the people who don’t. If people stay home feeling unwell but they don’t have covid, somebody else who is asymptomatic goes to work, but they do have it...how can they stop it from continuing to circulate?

It’s the dryer that will kill germs if there are any left. Warm water won’t change anything. Maybe, hot, hot, water would - but washing and rinsing in warm or cold would be about the same, I think...then the hot dryer.

My step sil uses ammonia in the wash to get cat pee out (she has cats upstairs). I can’t stand it, but I did try some lemon scented sudsy ammonia in with half the amount of detergent (says on the bottle how to use it for laundry - I put it in quickly and got out of the room). It didn’t make my laundry smell like ammonia...or lemon. Just clean.

For those who do live alone - maybe consider increasing 'household contact' to 2 households? Go to isolation just as many do if 1 in the household is sick, but until there's a high risk of exposure physical connection to 1 or a few people is probably worth the risk for many.

I live in a block of home units (maybe you call them apartments?). There are 14 units in the block, made up of either singles or couples. If one of us is on our balcony, others rush out on their balcony and we have a conversation. I consider myself fortunate in that my small drying balcony is next to my neighbour Suzy. Yesterday I mentioned that I'd run out of disinfectant -she had a can of Glen 20 -which she lobbed over her balcony onto mine. She is a cheery person - which I really need when I become anxious.

That's exactly the point. If the hospitals are overrun by people sick with this virus, they will not be able to treat anyone well.

How long have you been working in public health or a similar field?
