I saw an example of judging in media today. One of the local media outlets posted some photos of a local park. They spoke of how it's possible to go for a walk there and still maintain a distance. At least one person condemned this and said we should only be walking around our backyards. :rolleyes: That kind of sanctimonious attitude and judging is one thing I dislike about this.

I agree. She has a nice way of presenting information that is often difficult. I've only been annoyed with her response to the situation with my friend up north. I admit that part of my irritation is that I don't trust Northern Health. Alas, it's not a big deal and I have to trust the process.

Sympathy from here Pontifex. It is always hard to lose a family member, and now it is made so much harder by the lack of the funerals we are accustomed to.
 
Condolences in your loss Pontifex. Such a worriesome time - extra difficult to be ill, to be separated from loved ones who are ill, to be wondering & waiting.

A friend's father died last week - they gathered by Zoom for his funeral - and she commented that it was "oddly comforting" - that people who would not have been able to join them in person for a funeral were present because it was online. Stories & tears & laughter & prayers shared. Deep sadness that she was not able to visit her dad while in hospital.

I agree. At my last job before I retired, I was working (as a computer programmer) for a branch of the provincial government that handled labour complaints from workers who were not unionized.

It turns out the worst abuses occurred in two sectors: farm labour contracters and care homes. These generated the most complaints.

The park closures are the standard policy in the US and Europe too. Many people are quite puzzled by it. Perhaps they fear that too many people would go to the parks, and it would become as bad as an indoor gathering place?

One person, who is also monitoring the economy suggested it might be a wish to prevent large outdoor groups from forming, who might then protest or riot. It must be a very bad time for those who have lost their income, and there’s plenty of them.

I don’t know what to think.

Sorry to hear this, Pontifex. The hospitals are pretty good at breaking transmission chains but this Covid virus it really hard to control. It is extremely infectious. I’m at the point where I would avoid hospitals as much as I could. I know of pregnant women fearing to go there for childbirth yet uncomfortable about home delivery.

hospitals have always been places where people get infections sadly. Hospitals all have infection control departments to track and figure out what is going on. but this extremely contagious situation is much worse

that of course is keeping people from going to hospital. Odd to hear how quiet some ERs are Limited industrial accidents. Limited traffic accidents. And people who use the ER as a family doctor aren’t doing it any more

i expect when we get through this there will be a lot of changes in society. One of those th8ngs is the ability to connect on line, through church services, funerals, office work........

Some places are really showing their authoritarian streak, other places are resisting it while still being sensible.
 
I've read several things that suggest that authoritarian management of crises tends to make them worse, while letting authoritarianism gain inroads beyond the crises, into the public psyche (because they exploit crises). Something to beware of, including, in ourselves. It's part of that sanctimoniousness we're seeing happen.

Restricting civil liberties has to be in the least amount possible for the shortest duration possible, while still managing to contain and limit damage, and death in particular. When it gets beyond that it creeps into authoritarianism.

I like that the medical officer for BC is encouraging people to get outside and to use the trails responsibly. It's too bad the provincial parks are closed. I understand limiting camping and campfires. Many trails work well for people to get out and active while still keeping a healthy distance.

We walked along the waterfront today. It was so peaceful and quiet. Any walkers respected each other's space. It was strange yet pleasant to see it so empty. IMG_20200414_160207_550.jpgIMG_20200414_160207_551.jpg
