You had to know someone would step in if the White House and Congress didn't move quickly. I still suspect Newsom is considering shooting for the White House in 2028 so this is a political move as much as a real action to deal with the problems. The "kill switch" needs to be in the hands of people who know WTF they are doing, probably some engineers and academics employed at an arms-length agency empowered to monitor and act as needed. Unfortunately, the US has a history of not being especially strong on the "arms-length" part and political control is almost inevitable. And it does nothing about the rest of the world, only the big US companies.

(PS. I am currently chatting with Claude, getting help to build a map for one of my ongoing writing projects. It's working out pretty well.)

Trump wants AI CEOs to push forward and reiterated his belief that the US must outpace China in building AI,

saying “whoever wins AI wins.”

Maybe when AI takes over the world, they will be kindest to Trump.

He likely won't live that long given his age. But maybe being kept in a cage as a pet by Skynet would appeal to him.
