Thanks, were still under a tornado watch here....The Home Hardware in Ayr suffered damage to its roof and Greenfield Road was closed by downed power lines. And, yeah, confirmed tornado. There's a link in a post I made in Room.

I never heard of that before..what is a cold core tornado. Cold in the middle? What causes that? We're under a warning for possible cold-core funnels now. Not as dangerous as a tornado but could do damage if they were to touch down (they rarely do)
Cold core funnels aren't tornados. They form when the air is cooler vs tornados that form when the air is hotter. A tornado will almost always touch down, whereas the cold core funnels usually don't - they are smaller and stay high in the sky. On the off chance they do touch down, it's like a nasty wind.I never heard of that before..what is a cold core tornado. Cold in the middle? What causes that?

Pine Lake tornado 25 (?) years ago...by Didsbury LAST summerThere was a tornado in Grande Prairie maybe fifteen years ago. There was also the huge one that hit Edmonton in the 80's(?). I don't know why they hit there. As you say, not common.
We usually had at least a funnel cloud, which doesn't touch down, each summer. The humidity and heat plus cold fronts make perfect conditions for tornadoes and similar storms.
Another weather item to try to remember! A while back we started hearing about plough winds, which nobody seemed to have heard about before. I have now seen what one of those can do. Just hope it hits trees and fields, not anything financially important.Ahhh, good to know. Thanks

We've had some doozies even not counting the occasional tornadoes we get. That derecho that went across Ontario in 2022 wrought some havoc around here.I was in London, ON some years ago. It started to rain before we headed into the downtown mall (which was still nice back then) to watch a movie. The windows on the roof looked like they were under Niagara Falls. When we came out a couple hours later it looked like a war zone. Apparently it wasn't a tornado but some other wind that was like a horizontal tornado. It was quite disturbing.
Those are the plough winds or I've also heard them called straight-line winds - very intense, very focused. We do get a lot of those in Alberta - that's what took the stage down at Big Valley Jamboree a few years back and destroyed the barns at the Millarville Racetrack by CalgaryI was in London, ON some years ago.
