Where are the fires now, I wonder. I know Jasper is being reopened for residents (not tourists yet) so it must be at least stabilized.

Here is the latest on the Jasper wildfire:

⚠ Jasper Wildfire Complex Update: Current as of 7:30 pm, August 14, 2024 — Day 24 ⚠

Wildfire status
The wildfire is still classified as out of control and is estimated at approximately 33,048 ha. The priority is to establish a 100% containment status on the northwest perimeter of the fire that presents a risk to the townsite, which is currently 99% contained or controlled. The entire fire perimeter is 78% contained or controlled. A “contained” fire perimeter means that the fire is not likely to spread beyond existent or predetermined boundaries under prevailing and forecasted conditions. A “controlled” fire perimeter means that the fire is not expected to spread any further.

Forecast shows chances of showers later this week and this should allow crews to make progress in minimizing fire activity in other parts of the park.

Crews have extinguished hot spots south of the Palisades and north of the Jasper transfer station with the support of helicopter bucketing.

Crews working south of Maligne Road are stabilizing the fire by limiting the spread using natural fire breaks like rock features and the road. Crews in the Whirlpool area are working to cut off further spread to maintain habitat for caribou.

Jasper has various places for helicopters to scoop up water in buckets to drop on active fire areas. Bladders allow firefighters to feed hose lines with a guaranteed water supply. Bladders are set up at Morrow Slab, Palisades, Lake Edith, the SkyTram parking lot and other key areas.

❗Jasper National Park remains closed and under an evacuation order.

I wish national media would cover these better. Just because Southern Ontario isn't being affected much this year does not mean we shouldn't be told about the areas that are (besides Jasper that obviously attracted a lot of attention due to its popularity as a tourist spot).

I'm glad the papers are done and I'm not out in it. @KayTheCurler - that might explain why we have smoke as the wind has been from the east the past couple of days - not the north or west where we know there are fires.

And truth remains vague and faint as some leaders distribute it this way ... don't return them anything better than they give ... that'll eventually stop them as they lose skills for carrying out intelligence that they refer to as crapshoot! Blown ah ... that too can be rendered into a prepared meet Eire ... perhaps a diabolical greeter at the gated place ... 'athorn: "γ"! The house of לל ... 2 lights? One on, the alternate off, a bit observing ... 2 Laam-ish from the borderline spot?

Yesterday morning before I left to finish the paper deliveries there was a doe with 2 fawns in the front yard - didn't even flinch when I opened the door to make sure they weren't eating my cherries - looked at me and then slowly walked out of the yard...on my way to Bashaw yesterday afternoon to put gas in my car, I saw a hawk for the first time in YEARS (used to see all the time and had a couple up close and personal encounters)...this morning I heard a crow cawing/crying loudly so went to the door to see if I could see it and it was right on my doorstep flapping its wings - didn't even move as I stood at the door but then finally hopped off the step and walked down the sidewalk to the backyard, still flapping its wings.

Are the fires changing nature's habitats again maybe?

Wouldn't/shouldn't be much change around here as we're so far from any fires. Deer are very prevalent in town unfortunately, especially as I'm so close to the school grounds - I know they come into my yard as I see the tracks in the garden on occasion but haven't seen a family in here before...crows are just everywhere.

Good to know, I thought you were suggesting it was unusual behaviour....I guess they just like you.

This is getting ridiculous! my Telus cell phone bill is the wrong amount :( When you are locked into a contract they should not be allowed to change your charges! grrrrrrrrrrrrr I'm on hold waiting to talk to a person - between cell and internet and TV I've had to phone almost every month this year as they've messed up something :P I'd ditch them but they are the best price and most reliable for this rural area.
