I remember being taught this skill when I was about 13. Most of us made a mess! As we all wore nylon socks that wore like iron the skill wasn't greatly needed.

We were introduced to lots of hand sewing skills - button holes, hems, etc.

Can't even remember why I was taught to darn as I never ever had to use the skill (till now)

In theory, I know how to darn. In practice, the resultant lumpy patches are quite uncomfortable underfoot.
