What do you think? Is this something you could do? Does it appeal to you?
I have, in the past, lived communally with others.
I was then, as I am now, an introvert. Which means, essentially, that I prefer my peace and quiet and I am only really comfortable in small groups of people I know to some degree.
As long as I have room to withdraw I can tolerate most people for polite periods of time. As soon as I have my space taken away I notice that I become less tolerant of others and the way they do things.
Was great to have all the family under the same roof over Christmas. Could have been greater. To accommodate youngest daughter and grandson we gave up our Master Bedroom suite for two weeks. Which basically took away private space. Fortunately I still have two acres of woodlot that nobody but the dog and myself are much interested in visiting. So, sometimes I needed to go tramp about and look for animal tracks.
Small things, like the inability of some people to properly load a dishwasher start to snowball.
I took eldest daughter and her fiancee out one afternoon for a quick tour of the downtown St. John's area. Neither are really history-minded so that was a bit of a challenge explaining why I was showing them what I was showing them. Since I was in the Mazda 2 I braved the Battery which they marvelled at. We then made the run up Signal Hill to Cabot Tower (which was closed) and because it was not too cold or windy we were able to take some good shots of local sights from a higher elevation.
The worst thing about communal living (my experience) has been the areas where individuals with communal responsibilities slacked off and did not put much effort into their tasks.
While at Redeemer where we were 8 to a town-house style dormitory we shared cooking and cleaning duties. Until it was apparent that I was the only one capable of cooking a meal then by consensus I was exempt from all duties but cooking and that worked out to supper 4 times a week. Sometimes it meant that dishes left to soak needed to be cleaned before I could make dinner the next evening. That got corrected right-away.
Some were just proficient with a vaccuum or a dusting cloth as they were in the kitchen which meant that some weeks we had to put up with substandard effort.
That said, when everybody pulled their own weight (Summer Camp Staff) communal living was great fun. Of course, I always made sure I had time away from everyone just to keep myself sane.
Currently we live with our eldest Son and Kimberly's mother. Which is not without certain stressors. Which are best not discussed on the internet.
