we're discovering 'new' life all the time :3
i've been taking a look at missionaries' experiences and man, do they ever have to learn humility. and perhaps they have lessons to believers here (and of any stripe anywhere) when they have atheists or whatnot laugh?

there was this one guy Don Richardson, who was missioning in New Guinea. and when he first started telling the natives there aboot the bible they laughed.

he asked them why.

they said they saw Judas as the hero of the story because they really liked that he was a trickster, doing the opposite of what people expected.

Don, sadly, cured them of that notion by modifying the gospel to fit in with the natives' beliefs.

It's all in his book Peace Child.

another one, Dan Everett, first missioning the fascinating Piraha people in the Amazon. Dan was testifying.

he got to the point were he talked aboot his stepmother killing herself.

the natives laughed.

he was very hurt. "why are you laughing?"

"we don't kill ourselves. You people kill yourselves? what is this?"

one of the things that concerns me is when we lose a language, a culture, a people, we lose a whole world, a whole point of view that we, humanity, may never ever have again...
