Anyhow, this is under "Fun Stuff" so we should back off the politics.

On the car front, there was the near-total absence of the SUV. A few people in our neighbourhood had early ones like 80s era Chevy Blazer and Ford Bronco but generally family cars were big sedans (we usually had a Chevy, either a Bel Air or a Caprice Classic) or sometimes station wagons (which have now largely been killed off by the SUV). A few folks had smaller cars, usually as a second car (e.g. my German neighbours had a Beetle).

Fun stuff ... imagine what that is to top politicians ... beating something as in willowing? It doesn't translate well to the vernacular ... you know the lessor folk!

We always had station wagons because my dad needed to deliver his dies and other heavy items from his shop. It was also the family car and all 6 of us took our east coast vacation in it. I remember watching everything from the back window while my bro and I just tumbled around back there. I liked when we went to the drive in with our pj's on and sleeping in the back.

That's one thing we never did and we had a drive-in not far from home in Kitchener (Fairway and Manitou or something like that. Somewhere on Fairway near the mall anyhow.)

My elementary school used to have movies in the gym on Saturdays or something like that. Forget who ran it. That's where I saw the feature film of the 1966 Batman for the first time. Still one of my favorite Batman movies. I think my high school had movie nights, too. This was all pre-VHS or just as it was becoming widespread (seventies to early eighties) so watching movies at home was limited to what was on TV.

Which bring me to 1970s-1980s TVO and Elwy Yost. Between Saturday Night at the Movies and Magic Shadows, I saw a lot of good movies courtesy of Elwy. So fitting that his son Graham is a big name screenwriter (Speed) and TV showrunner (he's the brains behind Justified and its recent prequel, Silo, and has produced or written for a bunch of other TV shows, mostly on streaming).

Elwy Yost! Same here. I loved how he always made movies more interesting by telling bits of the background. I think because I didn't have anything but basic channels back then, tvo was about the best bet.

They were also part of my early Dr. Who watching but only ran it weekly while WNED was daily Monday-Friday so I sometimes saw an episode on TVO but the rest of the story arc on PBS or got to rewatch a story arc on TVO after seeing it first on WNED. SF author Judith Merrill used to do educational commentary after the episodes, too. She was an ex-pat American who ended up in Toronto and became one of Canada's top s-f writers.

I was a fan of Judith Merrill and wished she did a show of her own. So interesting. Just based on the show -- her sf books are on my bucket list. Haven't checked them out.
