Then gender, a cultural construct, is layered on top of that.

As for the article, life is complicated. We know that. The problem is, some people refuse to acknowledge it, taking refuge in things like literal understanding of scripture. There was a man and a woman created, so there must only be men and women. Only a man and woman are needed to reproduce, so anything else is a perversion of nature. And so on. I'll take the complexity. It makes life richer and more interesting.
