That's not how you do it. You ask for references. You meet in person (with others present) and interview them while you give a tour. You have them fill out an application. All they need to know is that you are going to pay the rent and not wreck the place or make a disturbance.

Her past renters issues are not my responsibility to appease her about just because I share with them the personal characteristics of age and/ or disability. I'm me and I am a new applicant.

With good reason. You can add extra barriers to your life or you can try to work through things. Clearly though, you're as biased against this woman as you are accusing her of being. That doesn't sound like a situation that would work out for you

No, she should keep her reasons and prejudices to herself. What she said was inappropriate and an effort to dissuade people who are “mature” from applying because she assumes we all have drug and alcohol problems. I have more experience living this stuff - this prejudicial behaviour than you. Even if I was an alcoholic or drug addict, which I’m not ... it is discriminatory to say those things. Alcoholics - substance addiction is a disability and disabilities in tenancy are protected grounds - have a right to live somewhere. They don’t have a right to cause problems. There’s a difference.

To put it differently, How dare she say that just because I told her my age and that I have a disability. If I said I was gay could she say the same regarding gay people? Or people of a particular ethnicity? No she could and absolutely should not. So, why is it okay to say that to me?

Well good luck to you then. That's not how I see it. You may have more experience in some ways than do I. That does not invalidate my experiences or perceptions. I see you putting up extra barriers that you don't need. If I'd had her experiences, I would be cautious too. That's life. Your experiences are causing you to be understandably cautious. I see you being just as biased towards her as you are accusing her of being. You may have the "rules" behind you, that doesn't make you less biased. She's letting strangers come in to her home. She needs to be cautious. I don't know what area of the city she lives in. She may have extra reason to be cautious.

As I said, good luck to you.

I have every reason if not more to be cautious.

Nope. I don't like her attitude. I'm not calling her.
I'm going to put in my 2 cents......personally I would go and look, now why would I do that? because sometimes some things get lost in text and emails....assumptions are made and inflections in text get misconstrued.
But the biggest thing for me would be the lack of available housing....so I would take the chance to check it out....maybe even play along. I know you have principles, so do I , but sometimes it's better to play things wisely than to lose out. Maybe????

No. If a landlord doesn’t know she should keep those things to herself she’s way out of touch. My experience tells me I do not want her as a landlord.

:(

Imagine if she were to say, “In my experience people with CP are drug addicts” or in my experience “I’ve had a lot of experience with (people of a certain ethnicity) being alcoholics”.

And she went right into assuming that I would want to bring in my own furniture (which is in storage on the mainland and I ‘don’t’ want to deal with moving it over at this point in time anyway)...but she didn’t ask she assumed from her bias. She could’ve said, “The place is furnished and unfortunately we don’t have room for extra furniture.” Actually “already furnished” is all she needs to say. That’s understood in the world of renters. She didn’t need to go on the defensive with “I am not willing to put the furniture in storage.” I didn’t ask her to. I didn’t mention a thing about it. She rambled off her prejudices before even meeting me. I was responding to the ad as is. Whatever bad past experiences she had she is projecting them onto me, which is discriminatory. They are not my problem to be aware of to appease her.

Protection from Discrimination
A landlord cannot refuse to rent to a tenant based on their race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, gender, sexual orientation, age or lawful source of income.

“Discrimination occurs when the effect of a distinction is to impose a burden, disadvantage, additional obligation, or to limit access. This is so whether the distinction was made in good faith or bad, intentionally or not.”

“Age: In Ontario, age protections related to housing only apply to people over the age of 15. British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Newfoundland allow housing to be restricted to people over the age of 55. Alberta’s human rights legislation does not protect people from age discrimination at all. In most provinces and territories, teenage boys and girls living away from their parents are not protected from age discrimination.
• Disability: This includes both mental and physical disability. Nova Scotia also prohibits discrimination based on an irrational fear of contracting an illness or disease.”

Rental advertisements that include phrases such as, "No kids," "Singles or couples preferred," "Suitable for professional couple," "Working single," "Looking for Christian family," and so on, are illegal in most jurisdictions.

This is an opportunity to meet this woman and help educate her. She has not actually refused to rent. She is being wary with good reason. You're in a position to see a potential apartment and clear up what might be a misunderstanding. Bridges and education are often better than walls.

She has not refused to rent she has deterred based on stereotypes. Which is still discriminatory. I’ve come up against sort of thing this time and again. The vacancy rate is so tight it brings out the worst in landlords...which is good for me to be aware of. This is the most ignorant NIMBY place I could ever stand to live in when it comes to renting. I’ve never experienced a rental market so terrible. It’s a small city that is, on one hand, trying to be “woke”, on the other, so bourgoise I can barely stand it. I’ve dreamt of running away back to Vancouver with only a backpack. But, realistically, I wouldn’t survive long that way in my condition.

Anyway, I have an appointment with a legal aid lawyer this afternoon - they happened to have a cancellation - to discuss it. I will let you know whether my concern is legally valid or not. I am not necessarily taking any action but I seriously want to know if I’m within my rights if I wanted to file a proper complaint...now or in future situations. I mean, these violations are blatant and rampant because nobody complains, not because there are not laws. I didn’t do it the last time when there were physical barriers in the way when they knew I was coming. This time I am going to talk to a lawyer. You should see how discriminatory ad postings can be! I can’t suck up to discrimination. At one point - for a good chunk of my life - I would’ve, but I’m sick and tired of it.

Wow Kimmio - you sound so much like one of my adult kids. He is obviously indigenous. Almost anything that happens in his life that he doesn't like he blames on discrimination. Simultaneously he refuses to see that others could use the discrimination card about the 60's Scoop Cash he is anticipating receiving!
